Lois Hine Department Chair of Nursing Programs When I was young, I always wanted to be a nurse and a teacher. I was the president of the student nurses’ association in high school. It took a while to get into college as life happened, I married, raised my daughter and worked at assorted jobs. When I finally got back to school, I started out by getting my LPN training, then went on for my associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing. I have a love of the elderly and worked most of my nursing career in geriatrics and medical surgical. I have even served as a surveyor for the Bureau of Facility Standards inspecting skilled nursing facilities. Witnessing the care and kind work of the nurses and staff in these facilities was so inspirational. I waited two weeks after graduation from my BSN to enter the master’s program and graduated as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Around the time I graduated there were no jobs available for nurse

practitioners in Idaho, but there was a position at the college for an instructor. Faculty teaching in the LPN program were required to be certified as an instructor through the state so I had to take six courses at the university. I asked and was told that I could include those courses toward the doctoral program in education so that is what I did. I graduated with my PhD in Professional Technical and Adult Education with a focus on teaching and curriculum development. I have used my education in positions as instructor, program director for nursing programs, dean of students, chief nursing officer for a group of schools, and curriculum develop- ment of practical nursing, registered nursing, RN-BSN, and master’s degree nursing programs. I love working with the faculty and students. It seems my wishes as a child to be a nurse or teacher turned into both and I’m so blessed. I live with my husband of 39 years, daughter Linda, and four dachshunds. In my spare time, which I have had very little of lately, I enjoy quilting and take a block of the month class at the local quilt shop. I love playing with my dogs and spending time with my husband who is retired. I am so excited to be joining you at Sumner College as the Department Chair of Nursing.

Thank you for all you do behind the scenes, Lois!
