Ablaze Spring 2025 2

The three men were not far off their trail. They caught up to the spot where Ann and Stanley were hiding. They saw blood on the leaves that turned into the woods and sneaked through to not make more noise. The men went up to the spot that Ann and Stanley were hiding and saw all their belong- ings, from the first aid kit to the shredded shirts, and knew they were close. Little did they know that Ann and Stanley were hiding on the other side of the rock with large sticks. Once the hunters weren’t paying attention, Stanley and Anne took the opportunity to attack. Stanley smacked one of them across the back of the head and Ann charged after another knock- ing him forward into the rock. One man remained standing with his hands in the air, “Please,” he begged. “I never wanted to do any of this.” Ann and Stanley watched him suspiciously, unsure what to do next. Suddenly one of the men was back up and charging after Ann. Ann shut her eyes and braced for impact. She heard a loud thud but still she stood unscathed. She opened her eyes to find the man that was just pleading over top of the other man, both hands wrapped tightly around his neck. Stanley grabbed Ann and they ran and ran until they finally reached the cars. Stanley and Ann drove in silence, unsure of what to say or what was real. They knew that their friends were gone and two men were still out in those woods alive. Who knew how many others had suffered the same fate and if they would ever be able to return to their normal lives. A faint ring cut through the silence, Ann reached into the bag in the backseat and found Julian’s cell phone. Ann dialed 911 while Stanley continued to drive until the woods were nothing but a small blimp in the rearview mirror.
