Art Directors claim the highest median pay at $100,890 annually and unlike comparable career paths for Art History degree holders, have a relatively low barrier to entry with the typical entry-level education being a bachelor’s degree. Educators provide the most growth opportunity for Art History degree holders. Postsecondary educator positions are expected to grow at a healthy 12% through 2031 while adding 159,400 new jobs. Postsecondary educators, in 2021, reported median salaries of $79,640. Although high school educator positions are not expected to grow beyond 5% through 2031 the addition of 48,700 new jobs outpaces the previous occupational areas mentioned above and the median salary for a high school educator in 2021 was $61,820. Within the current job market there is a healthy number of open positions. An indeed.com search of ‘Art History’, ‘Art’, ‘Architecture’, ‘Archivist’, and ‘Museum’ resulted in 50,340 open positions and 253 internships across the United States. Of those positions identifying required experience level, the vast majority were considered entry- or mid-level positions with about 400 positions not requiring any experience for entry. Salaries range from $40,000 to $100,000+ annually indicating a demand for graduates with art or related degrees ii . Competition: Across Washington, all public four-year universities offer a bachelor’s degree in art history. Additionally, the University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, and Seattle University all offer an Art History degree. There were a total of 56 Art History degrees awarded from these institutions in the 2021 academic year. The two regional universities, Eastern Washington University and Western Washington University, awarded 36% of those degrees, while the University of Washington awarded 24 degrees iii .
