STILL LOOKING AHEAD AFTER 20 YEARS AT AZCOMP, I’M STILL EXCITED
This May marks my 20th year working for AZCOMP. You might imagine that this milestone has been on the horizon for a while, inching closer and closer until it finally arrives with some disbelief. But the only true thing about that is the disbelief — because actually, it felt like it sneaked up on me! How have I spent two decades in this industry, and I still feel like it’s engaging, fresh, and always changing? At the same time, have I learned anything that is still valuable, given how different things are today than when I started? That’s the frame of mind I’ve had as I reflect on my time here. And I’ve realized that while things may not be the same, that’s kept me interested — and it also lets me cast an eye toward the future, which will be as different from today as things were even just 20 years ago. When I started at AZCOMP, the idea of Electronic Health Records (EHR’s) was not yet a reality for all practices. But it was coming, and it wasn’t hard to see. The only question was, how long would it be before most practices made the switch? From 2009–2012, the federal government (and, to some extent, the state governments) spent a huge amount of money and effort answering that question. The Affordable Care Act was the start of a long line of legislation and regulation aimed at the health care system in general. Those regulations first incentivized this transition with financial rewards to practices that went to EHR’s. But those incentives are mostly gone now, and many practices have only used EHR applications to meet the bare minimum requirements under the law or to get those incentives in the first place. It looked like we’d be stuck in a slow deadlock where practices had EHR but weren’t making full use of it.
But for my money, the biggest change will come from another direction entirely: the patients themselves and their behavior. If 2020 showed us anything, it was that the ability to do business remotely is no longer optional: Everything that could be done online or via the phone had to be done that way for safety and public health. Suddenly, practices that had actually embraced EHR technology found themselves in a better position than their peers who only had it to meet the law. They were able to work from home, keep patients out of the waiting room, make and check in for appointments digitally, and access important records at the drop of a hat. We’ve known for a long time that these new features and technologies probably wouldn’t go away after things went back to “normal.” If someone finds Zoom more convenient (or doesn’t have time to come in), then they’ll want to keep using it. If patients keep asking for this technology, providers will have to, well, provide . That’s an exciting place for AZCOMP to be because we get to help practices meet those challenges in a way that matches their workflow. When I look to the future, I see providers thriving with EHR technology at their disposal, helping them become more efficient in everything they do. And I see patients getting the full benefit of a health care provider who has “switched over.” Most exciting of all, though, is that I don’t know exactly what this will look like. I sit on the product advisory board and have for many years, which means I get to see and influence EHR technology as it’s developed, and one of the exciting things about being 20 years into my career is that we’re always meeting new challenges
in innovative ways. As we enter the third decade of the century — and of my time at AZCOMP — I can’t wait to see the new things we’ll bring to our clients and their patients as well.
And then, 2020 happened.
In my 20 years here, I have never had a year like that. We may not know the full effect for years, but I can already see the way things are heading — and it’s a very different future than we thought we were in for. New conversations were sparked about single-payer systems, universal basic income and housing, and the liabilities and duties of insurance companies. Any one of those topics could completely alter our field forever!

SPOTLIGHT ON KODY JOHNSON Kody Johnson still remembers the ad that sent him to our website, titled “Technical Support Jedi Wanted for Medical Software.” It appealed to him for several reasons, including the humor. “I have always enjoyed solving complex problems, helping/meeting new people, and getting to learn more,” Kody says. These are all good traits to have in our industry. Kody believes in the value of patience, too. “If you know me, I will always try to find a way to finish something as fast as possible. However, that is not always a good thing, especially in the job I have.” As he points out, you can’t rush to finish a service ticket or ignore what a customer says. MIRROR Wants to Change Home Gyms Forever
From big to small — that’s the pattern of the second half of the 20th century, and it’ll be the story of the 21st century, as well. At least, that’s what Moisés Naím says in his book, “The End of Power,” which examines the way power, like matter, changes form but never truly disappears. It might seem like the inevitable result of a growing global population, but Naím postulates that there’s more going on than meets the eye. He first shows how power is going from the few to the many, leading to “micropowers” like Mark Zuckerberg outweighing and outclassing government agencies. But that’s not hard to do, and as Naím points out, it’s been happening for a while. Look at the drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border. Originally, most smuggling was handled by a few large groups, beginning with Pablo Escobar’s Medellín organization in the 1980s. But as the drug war heated up in the early 2000s, something changed — governments cut the heads off of the Hydra, but then many little snakes took over. These small cartels sometimes grew to power (Los Zetas) but always resulted in anarchy compared to the previous stability. Can power contract once more? It’s tough to say — the internet drives the dissemination of power. We’ve all tried to figure out ways to get our exercise in during the pandemic. But what if you’re more serious about fitness, or, after months of watching Netflix, want to start getting in shape but don’t know how? These categories might seem like different demographics, but MIRROR is courting both — as well as everyone in between. MIRROR is, well, a mirror with a smartphone-like camera built in, as well as a display that sits behind the glass. Imagine a plain bedroom mirror with a few phone-like indicators projected on it, and you’ve basically got the idea. However, with a TV-like screen, MIRROR also offers 50+ genres of exercise classes, from beginning to expert, via a subscription- based model. Although the market for such a device was certainly there before, after the pandemic hit, MIRROR’s sales have skyrocketed, and there’s a reason for that popularity. Most MIRROR users appreciate the recorded videos, but the live classes are the real draw because they allow an instructor to see you and offer feedback
JUST A FLESH WOUND? THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT ...

Like it or not, these days, most peoples’ response to a crisis is to reach for their smartphones. This has led to some frankly horrifying behavior — like the “most hated” man in Australia taping injured and deceased police officers — but it’s also led to evidence used in courts to promote justice. Now, developer Healthy.io wants to harness that documentary impulse another way: wound care. When you get bit by a rattlesnake, you’re supposed to circle the inflammation every half hour with a sharpie and indicate the time, so doctors at the ER can see how quickly the venom is spreading. But what if you could do this with all wounds — without the sharpie, of course. One simple picture with the Healthy.io app, and you’re on your way to documenting the story of a traumatic wound. Of course, that’s only half of the puzzle. Once you’ve got pictures of one wound at various stages of healing, you can start to show them to a piece of software. Thousands of wounds later, and that software will know a thing or two about them. In fact, it might even be able to make suggestions to doctors in remote locations who don’t have the same access and benefits as their city counterparts. It’s a data-driven approach, to be sure. But then again, what isn’t these days? Healthy.io gained recognition for its kidney testing software that looks at smartphone pictures of urinalysis strips, no trip to the office required. If the bet pays off, it could be the first in a long line of companies looking to digitize health care, and in 2021, it isn’t hard to see the benefits of that.

Have you heard the story of Vivian Lord out of Little Rock, Arkansas? Disappointed in the lack of female toy soldiers — especially now that the U.S. military allows our fighting women to go into combat — Vivian wrote a letter to the address on her toy packaging. That letter made its way to Jeff Imel of BMC toys in Scranton, Pennsylvania. And Imel realized that she was absolutely on to something.
Mavericks present data and propose solutions, instead of just whining or
complaining. Vivian did this: She pointed out there were no female toy soldiers in her set and proposed a solution of adding some. She believed she’d prevail, and she didn’t fall into the negative outlook that traps so many. Like any maverick, Vivian cut right through red tape and went straight to the CEO — a challenge she didn’t consider backing down from. Ultimately, mavericks see the cup as half full, and Vivian is that way, too. She knew there could be a solution, and she found one. I know that everyone here at AZCOMP is a reflection of our core values, and I also know that we see in Vivian a kindred spirit. It brings a smile to my face (and sometimes a tear to my eye …) to see people all over the world reflecting our values. This little girl will definitely be going far!
Soon Vivian got a package from BMC: the first batch of female toy soldiers.
I’ll be honest, I tear up pretty easily, and this story got me going. It also got me thinking that Vivian would be a perfect fit for AZCOMP’s core values. At first, I thought this should go under “Surfing Jaws” because this little girl was both “Creative” and “Innovative,” but I realized that what was really going on was “We Chase Mavericks” instead.
