You’ve put blood, sweat, and tears into your family and your business. Now it’s time to protect it. Did You Notice? We Have a New Firm Name and Logo! 916-545-2790 tqdlaw.com OCTOBER 2023
Do me a favor: If you have a copy of last month’s newsletter handy, grab it and hold it up next to this one. Can you spot the difference? I’m sure you can, but just in case you missed it, I’ll share the big news. We’ve updated our firm’s name and logo! Instead of The Law Office of Tyler Q. Dahl, we’re now going by Dahl Law Group. We’ve also swapped our old logo (my initials, T.D.) for a new one featuring a shield. These might seem like small changes in the grand scheme of things — after all,
much we rely on teamwork. Thanks to the efforts of Elliott, Danielle, and the rest of our team, I’m not a one-man band anymore. WHY CHOOSE A SHIELD FOR THE LOGO? Choosing a new logo was a surprisingly emotional process for me and Lucero. We wanted our new logo to convey strength and protection, two of the key things we provide for clients like you. To start the process, we reached out to a designer who created a bunch of different logo iterations.
Overall, we experienced a lot of excitement and upheaval in a single summer! And I didn’t even cover all of it — turn the page for more good news.
“The name Dahl Law Group is a more accurate representation of where the firm is today and where we’re going. I think the word ‘group’ conveys just how much we rely on teamwork.”
we’re still focusing on tax law, business law, estate law, and asset protection — but they have an incredible amount of meaning behind them.
We toyed with the idea of using a gavel in the logo, but ultimately, those designs felt too traditional and old-
It’s safe to say our firm is growing and evolving, and I’ve loved experiencing each step of that evolution. I’m excited to come to work every day and push the team to the next level. Right now, it’s bringing me just as much joy planning our family’s Dia de los Muertos celebration — and that’s saying something! You know how much I love Dia de los Muertos, and now that Quentin is old enough to remember our traditions, Lucero and I are pulling out all the stops. We’re planning a big family party with professional face painting, a screening of “Coco,” traditional altars, and tons of marigolds and treats. If you celebrate, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
school. The shield was the right choice for us. Hopefully, when you work with us to trademark your company name or restructure your business agreements to avoid unnecessary taxes, you feel safe behind that line of defense. Right in the middle of our name and logo changes, we also moved from our old office to a larger one down the street at 555 University Avenue, Suite 110. The new space is twice as big as our old one, so we have plenty of room to grow and expand into our new home. I can’t wait to bring on new team members to fill our empty offices.
WHY PICK THE NAME DAHL LAW GROUP? Our firm’s old name, The Law Office of Tyler Q. Dahl, made me sound like a one-man band. That was true when I started the firm nine years ago, but now I have an entire team of excellent people behind me, including attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff. So, we changed the firm’s name to reflect that! The name Dahl Law Group is a more accurate representation of where the firm is today and where we’re going. I think the word “group” conveys just how

Protect Yourself From Jail Time and Fines!
Monarch butterflies might be the souls of the dead! Every year in early November, thousands of monarch butterflies flutter into Mexico. They settle on trees and bushes, turning green leaves black and orange with their colorful wings. These butterflies migrate 3,000 miles south to escape the winter chill, but their arrival has another meaning for Mexican families who celebrate Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead). For hundreds of years, these families have Did You Know?
Learn to Decode the Corporate Transparency Act
After years of handling by Congress, new reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) take
effect on Jan. 1, 2024. Government officials and supporters of the bill claim it will help eradicate money laundering by nefarious businesses. For businesses that conduct themselves morally, however, the law creates unnecessary extra work. The CTA will establish a national registry of business owners that fall into the “Reporting Company” category. A failure to report will result in steep penalties for businesses that are not granted an exception. This registry is to be maintained by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). California businesses of all sizes need to understand and be prepared for new reporting requirements under the CTA before the beginning of the year. We explored the bill and found several key points you need to understand. WHAT QUALIFIES AS A ‘REPORTING COMPANY’? Reporting companies are defined as any corporation, LLC, or other entity created by filing a document with the secretary of state or “similar office” in any state or territory, or with a federally recognized Native American tribe, or foreign entity registered to do business in the U.S. There are some exceptions, like publicly traded companies and nonprofits. You can contact our firm for a full list. WHAT ARE THE REPORTING REQUIREMENTS? If your company does not fall under an exception, you will be required to file beneficial ownership information (name, address, etc.) with FinCEN. Beneficial owners include anyone who has any legal agreement or contract to exercise control over the entity and/or owns or controls at least 25% equity in the entity. The company itself must submit the legal name of the company, its principal address, state of formation, and IRS taxpayer identification number. All of this information must be disclosed by Jan. 1, 2025 — one year from the effective date of the CTA reporting guidelines. If you fail to follow the requirements, you could be subject to hefty fines or even prison time. The nuances of this law put you at risk of losing not just money but your freedom. Fortunately, we can help you fulfill the reporting requirements. If you have questions about the CTA, contact our office at 916-545-2790 and tell your fellow business owners to do the same!

loved ones returning for the celebration — or as messengers sent on their behalf.
“All of Mexico’s Indigenous people thought of the monarchs as sacred in some way,” artist and educator Noemi
Hernandez-Balcazar told the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage. “You can see them in Aztec paintings and stone carvings, represented in the way Egyptians would depict cats.” It’s a beautiful idea. If a monarch lands on a late relative’s ofrenda (altar), it could indicate that that ancestor has found their way back through the veil. In Aztec culture, hummingbirds also hold this honor! Hopefully thinking about this tradition makes you smile next time you see a monarch butterfly. Tyler, Elliott, and Danielle were named three of Sacramento’s Top Lawyers! We’re so proud all of the attorneys on our team received this honor from Sacramento Magazine. Tyler won in the Estate Planning & Probate and Business/Corporate categories, Elliott secured his nod in the Estate Planning & Probate category, and Danielle received accolades in Business/Corporate and Nonprofit Organizations. Don’t Let Your Life Become a Hospital Horror Story! Complete These Documents to Retain Control if the Worst Happens
What happens if you become incapacitated without key estate planning documents like financial power of attorney designations and advanced health care directives in place? These tools provide peace of mind and guidance in the event you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Without them, incapacity could leave your health and finances in flux. WHO WILL MAKE YOUR MEDICAL DECISIONS IN THE ABSENCE OF A HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE? In California, if an adult becomes incapacitated or unable to effectively communicate their wishes for treatment, Assembly Bill 2338 applies. This law establishes a hierarchy of health care decision-makers. Your medical facility will assign an agent in the following order:
In short, your care and treatment are out of your hands if you haven’t completed a health care directive. Your treatment may also be delayed as the facility works to confirm the agent to act on your behalf. WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR FINANCES WITHOUT A FINANCIAL POWER OF ATTORNEY? In the same vein, you lose control of your finances if you are incapacitated and have not appointed an agent through the use of a financial power of attorney. However, there is a key difference: In this case, probate courts step in and appoint an agent who assumes financial duties on your behalf. This process often takes time and may result in someone unfamiliar with your financial circumstances or who has bad intentions for your money or health care taking control of your finances. If you have business interests, this becomes particularly detrimental. Because of the potential delays, your debts will grow and may become delinquent, your bills pile up, and recent financial progress can be significantly stunted. This is a significant risk. To protect yourself, complete your key estate planning documents before your health deteriorates or an accident strikes — and ensure your friends and relatives do the same.

Use Your Garden’s Fall Bounty for Home Decor!
Transform Your Fall Harvest Into Stunning Indoor Decorations!
If you have a backyard garden, you may find yourself looking for new ways to use all the crops you’ve grown. After all, there are only so many pumpkins you can carve, seeds you can roast, or squash you can spaghetti. So, instead of looking up “squash recipes” for the hundredth time this week, consider these indoor decor tips that utilize your garden’s bountiful harvest! A CENTERPIECE Fall fruits and vegetables make great centerpiece arrangements because they have both seasonal colors and unique textures. Consider arranging a few squash or pumpkins in a bowl or basket and topping them with a bouquet of
festive flowers. You can also mix herbs like basil, parsley, thyme, or rosemary into the bouquet for fragrance and a fuller appearance. Play with the different shapes and sizes of your gourds. Have them lean against each other or stack them for variation and depth in your display. A NATURAL WREATH Fresh herbs, flowers, or leaves from your fall harvest are perfect for an autumn wreath. All you need is a wreath form, which you can buy from your local craft store or online, and some floral U-pins.
seasonal herbs such as sage, rosemary, or oregano. Finally, attach some flowers to it! Squash or pumpkin blossoms work beautifully, but you can use any seasonal flower you have growing. AN AUTUMNAL HERB SWAG A “door swag” is a traditional holiday decoration, and it’s an easy way to add some color to your door without creating an entire wreath. To make a swag, grab a few bundles of your favorite herbs, secure the stems with a rubber band, wrap them with twine, and tie them off, leaving a few inches of twine on both sides. Then, tie those ends together to form a loop and hang the swag on your door!
Use large leaves as a base (pumpkin leaves are great), then layer on smaller
