Editor’s COMMENT MAKING THE MOST OF MARKET OPPORTUNITIES IN 2025 Welcome to our December/January edition. What will 2025 bring for Ireland’s electrical sector? Opportunity for installers and contractors well positioned to participate in decarbonisation projects if the Ireland and UK budgets are anything to go by. Announced on October 1, the Irish budget outlines government support packages for the retrofitting of social homes and residential and community investment in energy efficiency, as well as a reduction in VAT for heat pumps. The UK Autumn Budget, unveiled on October 30, lays out planned investment in industry, housing, electric transport and trade apprenticeships, with decarbonisation again a focus in alignment with the transition to net zero. For stakeholders seeking to enter or expand their presence in renewables, our BEPEX tradeshows incorporating ELECTEX offer a great opportunity to get hands on with the latest technology and chat through solutions with key brands and your peers. New venues have been announced for the 2025 shows, with ELECTEX BELFAST coming to the Eikon Exhibition Centre in Balmoral Park on April 9-10, and ELECTEX DUBLIN to the Sports Arena in Blanchardstown on September 10-11. To our readers and advertisers, thank you for your support in 2024 and we wish you health, happiness and buoyant trade in 2025. Alyson Magee

Irish Budget 2025 includes major investment in decarbonisation
An allocation of €90m to support the retrofitting of social homes, reduction in heat pump VAT to 9% and hike in carbon tax have been announced in Ireland’s Budget 2025. Unveiled by Ireland’s Finance Minister Jack Chambers on October 1, the Budget includes a record capital investment of €6bn for housing in 2025. Opportunity for Ireland’s electrical sector includes a €90m investment in retrofitting around 2,500 social homes to a Building Energy Rating of B2, in line with a Programme for Government commitment to retrofit 36,500 local authority homes by 2030. Further decarbonisation packages include a €477m investment in residential and community energy efficiency and a €20m allocation encompassing electric vehicles grants and infrastructure alongside other measures. A €7.50 increase to €63.50 in the rate of
carbon tax per tonne of carbon dioxide emissions was applied to petrol and auto diesel from October 9, and will impact coal, kerosene and gas from May 1, 2025. The 4.5% reduction in VAT applied to heat pumps has been welcomed by STIEBEL ELTRON, which opened a regional office in Dublin earlier this year. Mark McManus, STIEBEL ELTRON Ireland Managing Director, said, “Heat pumps are a proven, highly-efficient solution that use electricity to extract environmental energy for heating, hot water and cooling. “When paired with sustainably-generated electricity, which is increasingly the case from mains supply and now also often generated by homeowners themselves, they are the perfect solution. “We would encourage the government to consider any other incentives within their purview to make heat pumps more accessible.” www.gov.ie/en/campaigns/budget

Broadcaster TG4 powers forward with investment in solar energy
Suir Engineering appoints industry expert Peter Browne as head of strategy
A ground-mounted solar PV system has been installed at TG4’s headquarters in Connemara.
Co Clare business EnergieXPro has installed a 100.70 kWp ground- mounted solar PV system in a seven- month project at broadcaster TG4’s headquarters in Connemara. TG4 is aiming to increase the sustainability of its operations by integrating solar power into its energy supply to supplement its electricity usage throughout the year. Facing challenging terrain including boggy conditions, EnergieXPro spent six weeks on site to complete the installation. The 100.70kWp system is expected to reduce TG4’s carbon emissions by approximately 51.4 tonnes annually, equivalent to planting between 1,550 and 2,330 trees each year.
Ger Barry, Director at EnergieXPro, said, “Partnering with TG4 on this groundbreaking solar project has been an incredibly rewarding experience. By integrating our cutting-edge solar technology with TG4’s commitment to sustainability, we are setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in the broadcasting industry. “This collaboration not only highlights the potential of renewable energy but also underscores the importance of innovative solutions in tackling climate change. We look forward to continuing our partnership with TG4 and driving forward the future of sustainable broadcasting.” www.energiexpro.com

Nearly a quarter of e-waste is ending up in household rubbish bins each year including electronics packed with precious metals, plastics and other essential materials, according to WEEE Ireland. Ireland’s largest e-waste recycling scheme is calling for a change in how people view waste items such as power tools, electronic toys, mobile phones, tech gadgets and other electrical and electronic goods. Statistics from the Global E-Waste Monitor cite an annual 14 million tonnes of electronic waste as improperly thrown out with regular rubbish globally. WEEE Ireland’s own research conducted earlier this year indicates one in eight people in Ireland continue to dump small electrical items in household bins, rising to one in four among younger age groups. WEEE Ireland operates hundreds of collection points nationwide across local authority civic amenity centres and participating electrical retailers, where consumers can drop off old and broken electronic items for free recycling. www.weeeireland.ie WEEE Ireland highlights issue of recoverable electrical waste

LED BY PROFIT CENTRE MANAGER ANN-MARIE THOMPSON, EWL GREENTECH DUNDALK’S TEAM OF NINE IS READY TO CONSOLIDATE ITS POSITION AS A LEADER IN THE RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKET… Pairing unmatched brand reach with high-quality customer service
One year on from opening its doors in Dundalk, EWL Greentech is fully staffed and stocked, and primed to consolidate its position as a leader in the renewable energy market. Established in 2013 as a division of UK wholesaler The Electrical Equipment Co, Greentech is focused on the renewables sector. Its first island-of-Ireland branch, EEL Greentech Belfast, was opened in 2022 with the Dundalk branch following in late 2023. Heading up a team of nine at EWL Greentech Dundalk is Ann-Marie Thompson, who joined as business development manager in March 2022 and was promoted to profit centre manager in July 2024. Benefitting from the Greentech group’s extensive stock range, as well as incentives such as Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland grants and zero VAT for some renewables, the business has enjoyed a strong first year of trading. “We’ve been focusing on building the foundations for a successful business for the next 10 years and making sure we have the right team in place and are finding the right customers,” said Ann- Marie. “We’re preparing for 2025 and making sure we’re where our customers need us to be. “Finding staff can be the hardest part of running a successful business, but we’re now fully staffed with the right team in place to be able to train our customers as well. “As one of 15 locations in the Greentech network with more to come, one of the biggest assets of this business is our unmatched reach of brands which is constantly expanding with our newest addition being Duracell Energy. “Duracell Energy has just come into the

said Ann-Marie. “I’m not stuck with specific buying terms or falling in line with one-and-only brands. We can do whatever our customers need.” With a spacious 16,000sqft site holding around €3.5m of stock, and a well-trained team in place to offer high-quality customer service, EWL Greentech Dundalk is well positioned to consolidate its leading position in the burgeoning renewables market.

WORKWEAR
MATCH YOUR WORK CLOTHES TO YOUR LEVEL OF ACTIVITY AND SURROUNDINGS - STAYING DRY, KEEPING WARM AND PROTECTING AGAINST THE WEATHER…
Dress in layers with MASCOT ® CUSTOMIZED
Layer 3 - A layer to protect you from the elements Your outer layer needs to be wind- and waterproof to protect you from the elements. Breathability is also important. A high level of breathability is necessary to stay warm. If you can’t get rid of moisture, you will get wet and then cold. The MASCOT ® CUSTOMIZED range includes a wide selection of jackets that are breathable, wind and waterproof or water-repellent. Whether your outer layer needs to be waterproof or water- repellent will depend on your exact surroundings. Try the 22302-649 Softshell Jacket made from 61% recycled polyester. It is water-repellent and windproof so you can perform at your best, no matter the weather. It has a water and dirt-repellent surface treatment and reflectors to keep you safe in the dim winter light. For further information, contact Mascot: T: +353 (0)1 267 8900 www.mascotworkwear.ie
Winter is here which means it’s a great idea to have optimal protection in the changing weather conditions you’ll find yourself in while working. The best way to do this is to dress in layers and to choose the right clothing from inner to outer. The right clothes are ones that match both your level of activity and your surroundings. The MASCOT ® CUSTOMIZED range includes a wide selection of T-shirts, tops and jackets, all designed to be combined in layers. We recommend counting to three when getting dressed for your working day: (1) Stay dry, (2) Keep warm, (3) Protect against the weather. Layer 1 - A moisture-wicking layer Your inner layer should first and foremost be moisture wicking, so you avoid getting cold. You will best achieve this with a polyester material combined with an elastic fibre to ensure full freedom of movement. The 22482-618 Short Sleeve T-shirt is available in five colours and is the perfect base layer.
A functional and moisture-wicking T-shirt for users who want exceptional comfort, even when working at a high tempo. It has a modern fit, and the added benefit of being made from 90% recycled polyester. The result is comfortable and effective regulation of your body temperature - even in warm working conditions and when you are physically active. Layer 2 - A warm and insulating layer You can often get away with just two layers in the milder winter weather – a moisture-wicking layer and an insulating layer. Your insulating layer can even be a combination of several different products. The purpose of the insulating layer is to keep you warm while also leading any moisture away. Your second layer should keep you warm in cold conditions without inhibiting your freedom of movement. The 22503-681 Fleece Jumper with zipper comes in eight unique colours and is the perfect insulating layer. It is made from 100% recycled polyester and has a modern fit, which is a slimmer fit that holds closer to your body.

UK BUDGET REVIEW
The Budget, revealed on October 30, has received a mixed response. There is no doubt that business will carry the biggest burden of taxation. But what does it mean for ECA members, and are there any silver linings? The Chancellor’s commitment to invest in industry, housing and electric transport is welcome; all areas which will generate opportunities for ECA members. Public capital investment should help unlock private investment in our infrastructure and low carbon technology. But is it all jam tomorrow? Education is a winner Underpinning business growth for our sector is a pool of enough skilled workers. Members have told us how the lack of competent workers and shortfalls in apprentice training are an impediment to their business ambitions. We have been pressing the new Government since they came into office to listen and act on member concerns. There is no doubt that education, and further education (FE) in particular, was a winner in this budget. We welcome the £40m investment to transform the Apprenticeship Levy into the Growth & Skills Levy in so far as this moves the emphasis away from masters’ degrees towards trade apprenticeships. £300m boost for FE to support skills development. However, this budget lacks crucial detail on how it will support skills access for smaller firms, which make up 99% of the electrical contracting sector. These businesses will now also carry the higher burden of Employer National Insurance and higher apprentice costs. A bitter pill to swallow Member firms will have to find an additional 6.7% to cover the National Living Wage for over-21s. This is more than treble the current inflation rate, taking it to £12.21 per hour. The National Minimum wage for 18-20-year-olds had the biggest increase on record of 16%, hitting £10 per hour. The 18% increase to the apprentice rate follows a 21% boost in 2024. This means JIB apprentice rates, which are currently being reviewed, will need to increase substantially in order to keep pace. The Chancellor committed to raising an extra £40bn in taxes, with the majority (£25bn) being raised through an
increase in employer National Insurance contributions. This will be achieved through an increase in the rate from 13.8% to 15%. And by a reduction in the earnings threshold at which employers start paying, from £9,100 a year to £5,000 a year starting in April 2025. There is some countervailing support for small businesses, through an increase to the Employment Allowance from £5,000 to £10,500. Workers’ rights Implementation of Labour’s plans to upgrade workers’ rights through various measures, including enhancing sick pay and day-one employment protection rights like unfair dismissal, comes at an estimated cost to businesses of £5bn a year. This all adds up to an increasing cost of employment to employers throughout the UK, which SMEs in particular may struggle to sustain. “That’s how we grew our business, by building those brands and by delivering a genuine personal touch to our customer service.” NES represents the latest acquisition for BM Electrical Wholesale, which continues to expand and innovate while maintaining the personal touch of a family business. Leading the group is Managing Director Ken Robinson, who has been joined in the business by his sons Joshua, Luke and Tom.
NES marked its fifth year in business back in 2020 with a refurbishment of its trade counter and the introduction of an improved layout within the branch. As well as electrical supplies, it offers site, energy and heating surveys, LED lighting, lighting design, test equipment and cables. “I believed we could do things differently by delivering a customer-centred service, listening to what our clients want, putting that on the shelves and keeping

FOCUS ON POWER
MANUFACTURER – PRECISION SWITCHGEAR AND CONTROLS
Precision Switchgear and Controls has expanded its team alongside the growth of the business.
TURNOVER IS DOUBLING YEAR ON YEAR FOR THE DUNGANNON BUSINESS, DRIVEN BY GROWING DEMAND FOR RENEWABLES, DATA CENTRES AND PHARMA PLANTS ACROSS EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA… Precision Switchgear and Controls: Pioneering growth and global reach in an expanding market
Over the past 12 years, Precision Switchgear and Controls has strategically positioned itself as a leader in the switchgear industry, catering to a growing international client base with innovative solutions and a comprehensive product portfolio. Founded to meet the increasing demand for motor control centres and switchgear, particularly in the burgeoning data centre and renewables sector, the company has solidified its reputation for quality and adaptability. Precision has expanded in line with its business growth and now boasts a team of 35, including a mix of junior and senior design engineers, estimating engineers and a skilled workshop workforce of 25 operatives.
Company Directors Michael Connolly and Peter McKearney recognised the untapped potential for specialised switchgear services tailored to data centre infrastructure, renewables and pharma sectors, and set about building a company to be a strategic supply chain partner within those sectors. The directors are backed by a growing employee workforce, led by General Manager Paul Carolan, who also has extensive experience in global manufacturing markets. “Our company was established to support the demand from Irish contractors working across Europe for main distribution boards, low voltage distribution, PDUs and AGSs, specifically for the data centre market,” said Michael. “Many of our current clients
have been with us since our early days in 2012.” In 2018, to accommodate its expanding operations, Precision moved to custom- built premises in Dungannon, equipped with cutting-edge CNC copper and Perforex machinery. The company has secured certifications as a CUBIC Modular System manufacturer and Schneider Electric panel builder, further establishing its credibility within the industry. “Our turnover has consistently doubled year on year,” said Michael. “Last year alone, we exported to over 10 countries across Europe and North America.” Precision has expanded its scope to include energy solutions through partners and Scada systems, tapping into the growing hydrogen and renewable energy

sectors. The company has also launched a new division dedicated to medium-voltage switchgear transformers. “Renewables, data centres, and pharmaceutical plants have been significant drivers of our business growth,” said Michael. Demand for battery energy storage systems is also on the rise, with a robust project pipeline set for 2025, along with an increased focus on managing complex power systems. While Precision’s portfolio includes high- profile projects globally, it is proud to be the local specialist delivering projects in the north and south of Ireland from Belfast’s Grand Central Station to Glanbia cheese factories, Sligo University Hospital and data centres in Europe’s hub, Dublin. Ventures in North America’s oil and gas industry have followed, with ongoing projects including installations for financial institutions in Canary Wharf and data centres for major social media firms in Scandinavia. Michael highlights an upcoming challenge: “In 2025, constraints on data centre construction in Ireland will push more of this activity into Europe,” he said. “We anticipate a surge in projects related to
renewables, hydrogen production, oil and gas, and commercial infrastructure such as hotels, banks and office buildings. Scandinavia, in particular, is set to remain a key growth region.” Precision’s competitive edge lies in its agility and responsiveness, crucial for a market where lead times can be lengthy. “Our company structure allows us to react swiftly,” said Michael. “We leverage AI in our control panel development and design, which enables us to turn around quotations within five to seven days. “Clients appreciate the access they have to senior management. This close collaboration makes us an extension of their teams, almost like an in-house panel-building partner. Our dynamic and personable team is dedicated to guiding clients from project inception to completion, ensuring we’re deeply involved in their success.” Precision Switchgear and Controls continues to position itself as a trusted partner, combining innovation, expertise and a client-focused approach that propels it to the forefront of the global switchgear industry.
