Nearly a quarter of e-waste is ending up in household rubbish bins each year including electronics packed with precious metals, plastics and other essential materials, according to WEEE Ireland. Ireland’s largest e-waste recycling scheme is calling for a change in how people view waste items such as power tools, electronic toys, mobile phones, tech gadgets and other electrical and electronic goods. Statistics from the Global E-Waste Monitor cite an annual 14 million tonnes of electronic waste as improperly thrown out with regular rubbish globally. WEEE Ireland’s own research conducted earlier this year indicates one in eight people in Ireland continue to dump small electrical items in household bins, rising to one in four among younger age groups. WEEE Ireland operates hundreds of collection points nationwide across local authority civic amenity centres and participating electrical retailers, where consumers can drop off old and broken electronic items for free recycling. www.weeeireland.ie WEEE Ireland highlights issue of recoverable electrical waste
