Welcome to Erewash Valley Gymnastics Club

A Community-Driven Club with a Passion for Gymnastics for All Erewash Valley Gymnastics Club (EVGC) is a vibrant, community- based organisation and proud registered charity, dedicated to making gymnastics accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background.

Our mission is simple: to offer Gymnastics for All , delivering a wide range of classes that promote fitness, fun, and friendship at an affordable price.

Founded in 1974 with just one coach and six gymnasts in a local leisure centre, EVGC has grown into one of the largest non-profit gymnastics clubs in the East Midlands. Today, we welcome over 1,200 members aged 0 to 18+ across two purpose-built sites in Ilkeston and Long Eaton . From babies in our Stay and Play sessions to elite squad gymnasts and adult drop-in classes, our pathways support every stage of development. Our Long Eaton site is home to rhythmic gymnastics and a wide range of GFA classes. Our Ilkeston site houses both recreational and advanced/squad-level facilities, including a state-of-the-art pit area and bleacher seating for events.

About Gymnastics – The Benefits

Building Strong Bodies, Confident Minds & Lifelong Skills Gymnastics is a fantastic way for children to build strength, coordination, and flexibility while having fun and staying active. It helps young people develop balance and body awareness, which supports their physical health and benefits other sports and everyday movement. Beyond the physical, gymnastics nurtures confidence, focus, and resilience. Children learn to set goals, celebrate progress, and support one another—building friendships and life skills that last far beyond the gym. Whether they’re just starting out or aiming high, every gymnast at EVGC is encouraged to grow, express themselves, and enjoy the journey.

Gymnastics is one of the most well-rounded activities a child can take part in. At EVGC, we believe in the power of gymnastics to support physical, emotional, and social development, while keeping things fun and engaging for every age and ability.

Gymnastics for All – Fun, Inclusive, and Accessible

Gymnastics for All (GFA) is a term used across British Gymnastics to celebrate the recreational side of the sport. It’s all about making gymnastics accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience. At EVGC, our GFA programme is designed to offer a safe and supportive environment where children and adults can explore movement, build confidence, and develop physical skills at their own pace. Whether you're just starting out or continuing your gymnastics journey, GFA is about participation, personal progress, and having fun.

GFA includes a wide variety of sessions: • Preschool Gymnastics for our youngest movers • Recreational Gymnastics for school-aged children

• Homeschool and Inclusion Gymnastics for tailored support • Adult Gymnastics , Stay & Play , and Peaceful Play for flexible, drop-in fun • Teen Workshops , Holiday Fundays , and Birthday Parties for social and seasonal engagement

Gymnasts in GFA work towards British Gymnastics’ Rise Programme awards, which offer structured progression through fun and achievable skills. While competitions are not required, we love to celebrate progress through internal shows and displays.

GFA is the heart of our club - it’s where friendships are formed, confidence grows, and every gymnast is celebrated for who they are and what they achieve.

Preschool Gymnastics Our preschool sessions introduce young children to gymnastics through imaginative play and gentle structure. Gymnasts build confidence, independence, and key life skills such as sharing, listening, and socialising, all in a supportive setting. Children work towards Rise Discover Levels 1, 2, and 3 , guided and encouraged every step of the way by our caring coaches. While competitions aren’t required, participation in our internal Christmas and summer shows is warmly encouraged. Recreational Gymnastics Open to children aged 4 (in full-time education) up to 16 years old, our recreational classes are grouped by ability, not just age, to ensure every gymnast is challenged and supported at the right level. Gymnasts train across a wide range of apparatus including Floor, Beam, Bars, Parallel Bars, Vault, Track, and handheld equipment. They progress through both Rise Explore and Rise Excel levels, developing core skills, apparatus technique, and teamwork through structured yet fun sessions. Coaches guide, support, and celebrate progress every step of the way. While competitions are not required, gymnasts are warmly encouraged to take part in our internal Christmas and summer shows to showcase their achievements.

Homeschool Gymnastics Our homeschool sessions are tailored for children who are home- educated, offering gymnastics as part of their physical education curriculum. Gymnasts work towards the Rise Programme appropriate to their age and ability, using a variety of apparatus including Floor, Beam, Bars, Vault, Track, and handheld equipment. Participation in internal shows is encouraged, though competitions are not required. Inclusion Gymnastics EVGC is proud to offer inclusive sessions led by specialist-trained coaches and we are honoured to have a disability gymnastics champion training with us Our inclusion classes support gymnasts with additional needs at recreational or higher levels. We also offer a Peaceful Play option - shorter, pay-as-you-go sessions held in a quiet, calm environment after regular classes have finished.

Higher Level Gymnastics Pathways

For Gymnasts Ready to Take the Next Step

At EVGC, we offer a range of advanced pathways for gymnasts who show passion, dedication, and potential. These programmes provide opportunities to train at a higher level, develop more complex skills, and, if desired, take part in competitions and performances. Each pathway is tailored to support gymnasts as they grow in confidence, ability, and ambition.

Advanced Recreational Gymnastics

Our Advanced Squads are ideal for keen gymnasts who want to train more intensively while still enjoying the fun, fitness, and friendships that gymnastics brings. These gymnasts train on the same apparatus as those in our Artistic programmes, but competition is optional. Squads are split by age and ability to ensure every gymnast receives the right level of challenge and support: • Pre-Advanced (Ages 4–11): The first step from recreational gymnastics into the advanced pathway. Gymnasts may remain in this group and progress within its levels.

• Mini Advanced (Ages 4–8): Focuses on building foundational skills and preparing gymnasts for beginner competitions.

• Junior Advanced (Ages 8–11): Introduces bigger skills and opportunities to represent EVGC at internal and external competitions.

• Senior Advanced (Teenagers+): Offers up to three training sessions per week and focuses on mastering more complex skills, with many opportunities to perform and compete. Uniform/Kit Requirements : Mandatory purchase of a competition leotard. Advanced-specific training kit is available, and gymnasts may also require handguards.

Display Gymnastics

Display Gymnastics is a dynamic, floor-based discipline where gymnasts perform choreographed routines as part of a team. Combining gymnastics and dance, display routines are performed at a variety of events, from local carnivals and fundays to regional and national Gymfusion showcases. Some gymnasts even go on to represent Great Britain at international events like Gymnaestrada. Display groups are invitation-only and organised by age and ability. We hold regular trials for gymnasts interested in joining this exciting and expressive pathway. Uniform/Kit Requirements : Mandatory purchase of display team leotards or outfits. Display-specific training clothing is also available.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Rhythmic Gymnastics blends dance, flexibility, and apparatus handling into captivating routines performed to music. Gymnasts use five types of hand apparatus - Rope, Hoop, Ball, Clubs, and Ribbon - to showcase throws, catches, shapes, and expressive movement. EVGC offers rhythmic gymnastics at multiple levels, including non- competitive options for those who simply want to enjoy learning a new discipline. Rhythmic is an invitation-only programme, and our coaches regularly scout for gymnasts with potential. Trials are held periodically. Uniform/Kit Requirements : Mandatory purchase of competition leotards. Rhythmic-specific training clothing is also available.

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)

Our WAG programme is designed for gymnasts who aspire to reach the highest levels of the sport. Squad gymnasts train between 6 and 15 hours per week , working towards County, Regional, and National competitions, and perhaps one day, the Olympics.

Gymnasts train across four apparatus:

Floor • Vault • Beam • Uneven Bars Entry is via trial, and we look for gymnasts with both ability and commitment to train at this intensive level. Uniform/Kit Requirements : Mandatory purchase of a competition leotard and other items. WAG-specific training kit and handguards may also be required.

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG)

Our MAG programme mirrors the intensity and ambition of WAG, offering boys the chance to train at elite levels. Squad gymnasts train between 6 and 15 hours per week , with opportunities to compete at County, Regional, and National levels.

Gymnasts train across six apparatus:

Pommel Horse • Floor • Vault • High Bar • Parallel Bars • Rings Entry is via trial, and we seek gymnasts with the drive and discipline to train at this level. Uniform/Kit Requirements : Mandatory purchase of a competition leotard and other items. MAG-specific training kit and handguards may also be required.

Sessions are engaging and varied, helping gymnasts progress at their own pace while developing physical, social, and emotional wellbeing.

Equipment Explained

Discover the Apparatus That Powers Our Gymnasts At EVGC, our gymnasts train on a wide range of professional equipment designed to build strength, confidence, and skill across all disciplines. Here’s a look at what they’ll be using: Floor A 12m x 12m sprung floor where gymnasts perform impressive tumbles, leaps, spins, and dance moves—all choreographed to music. It’s the heart of artistic expression and athleticism. Beam Just 10cm wide and 5m long, the beam stands 1.25m off the ground. Performing on it requires incredible balance, strength, and bravery— every step is a triumph. Uneven Bars Two bars set at different heights (1.7m and 2.5m) with 180cm between them. Gymnasts swing, turn, and transition between the bars, finishing with a powerful dismount. Vault The vaulting table stands up to 1.35m high. Gymnasts sprint up to 25m, launch from a springboard, and execute dynamic somersaults and twists before landing in a designated zone.

Rings Suspended from above, the rings challenge gymnasts to perform a mix of swinging and static strength elements. Each routine ends with a controlled and powerful dismount.

Pommel Horse A true test of endurance and control. Gymnasts use only their hands to circle, turn, and travel across the leather horse and its two handles.

Parallel Bars Standing 2m high, these bars are used for swinging, turning, and strength elements both above and below. Routines finish with a confident dismount. Horizontal Bar At 2.8m tall, the high bar is a crowd favourite. Gymnasts perform daring swings, release-and-catch moves, and multi-somersault dismounts that showcase their courage and skill. Air Track A long inflatable tumbling surface that provides extra bounce and safety for practicing flips, rolls, and landings. It’s ideal for building confidence and technique.

Foam Pits Soft foam-filled pits used for safe landings during high-level skill development. They’re essential for learning new moves with reduced risk.

Handheld Apparatus Used in rhythmic gymnastics, these include ribbons, hoops, balls, and clubs. They help develop coordination, creativity, and flair.

Trampolines & Trampettes Our trampolines and trampettes are used for aerial awareness, rebound training, and fun conditioning. They’re a favourite among gymnasts of all ages and levels.
