Supporter Magazine: Spring 2017

W e are extremely proud of our diversity at AnglicareSA and there are always a number of Refugee Week celebrations. This year Refugee Week ran from 18-24 June and was an opportunity to recognise the journeys and the contribution that people from refugee backgrounds have made in enriching our culture. AnglicareSA has been supporting people from a refugee background for more than ten years. This year's theme was 'With courage let us all combine', taken from the second verse of the national anthem. The theme celebrates the courage of refugees and of people who speak out against persecution and injustice. It serves as a call for unity and for positive action, encouraging Australians to welcome refugees and to acknowledge the skills and energy refugees bring to their new home. A number of AnglicareSA sites celebrated with morning teas, shared lunches with a variety of cultural cuisines, and guest speakers such as Mohammed Al-Khafaji, CEO of Welcome to Australia, who spoke about his journey to Australia. In the north, our Better Places Stronger Communities team held an event for AnglicareSA tenants and community members. Approximately 80 people attended the event, which featured delicious Syrian food, singers from Syria and Iraq, henna tattoos, an Egyptian belly dancer and a gospel choir. Participants had a great time with many people singing and dancing as they watched the performances. One young boy made a beautiful card to say thank you for such a fun event and begged his mother to deliver it to AnglicareSA staff. It was great to see the community come together in a celebration of diversity and culture!
