meeting clients and working with them on projects,” Davies says. “As well as larger companies, BDO has lots of small and medium-sized clients too, which gives apprentices really good hands-on experience in different industries and sectors.” Each of BDO’s apprenticeships lasts four years, compared to its graduate programmes, which take three years to complete. “For school-leavers, these apprenticeships are therefore a quicker route to becoming a fully-qualified chartered accountant,” concludes Davies. Deloitte is the second-largest of the ‘Big Four’ accountancy & professional services firms in the UK, with over 27,000 employees and more than 1,300 partners. It offers a number of different entry-level programmes after school & sixth form college. “We wanted to give people choice and offer school and college-leavers a genuine alternative to
rewatch our lectures at another time. Depending on what I’m doing, I spend time in the office, and I can work or study from home too. There’s also lots of opportunities to get involved in networking events, work socials and external societies. I’m really enjoying the work I’m doing and once I finish my degree apprenticeship, I’d hope to stay at KPMG and take on more responsibility. ”
I’m based in the Birmingham office and usually have two or three lectures during the working week for my degree. And there’s one full day each week to spend on university assignments or meeting with your university coach. We’re studying for our BSc degree with Multiverse, which is an online university. It’s all very flexible, so if we have an important client deadline, we can move our university day or
at the time, KPMG’s was in conjunction with audit, which I really liked. Also, the people culture at the firm was a big factor. Throughout my application process, everyone from apprentices to senior managers, were always happy to answer any questions or address concerns I had. I joined KPMG in September 2023, so I’m now in the second year of my four-year digital & technology degree apprenticeship. KPMG is an accountancy and professional services firm and I work in its data analytics team. In simple terms, my job is to collect and cleanse financial data before it goes to the firm’s audit team, who then use the reports we produce to prepare their part for the client.
There was a lot to learn, especially all the different
coding languages and internal programmes that you have to get to grips with. But because the apprenticeship is aimed at school-leavers, there’s no requirement to have a background in data or analytics or any previous experience, you’ll learn everything you need to during the apprenticeship.
