Banking & Finance
Banking on a career in finance From the City of London to high street banks across the UK, degree apprenticeships in financial services offer exciting opportunities.
T he banking and finance sector is a vital part of the UK economy and is the country’s fourth-largest industry. It employs around 2.5 million people in high street banks, investment banks, fund managers, insurance companies, venture capital firms, credit card providers, brokerages, and payment processing companies. Between them, these employers contributed over £208 billion to the economy in 2023 –almost 10 per cent of the country’s total economic output. For sixth form school-leavers, the financial services professional degree apprenticeship is a four-year programme. It introduces apprentices to financial institutions, their products & services, how to develop client & customer relationships, the
structure of the financial industry, and the legal & regulatory frameworks. At least ten major banking & finance employers listed in The Sixth Formers’ Guide to Degree Apprenticeships are offering degree apprenticeships in 2025, including Barclays, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs. HSBC is one of the best-known names in the sector and has degree apprenticeship programmes that cover commercial and retail banking, as well as technology, cyber and data. “Our level 6 financial services professional apprenticeship is a very broad programme that helps give our apprentices a really deep insight into banking and finance,” says Iain Heath, Head of Emerging Talent UK at HSBC.
