Ashby-Approved Halloween Movies for the Whole Family

My wife and I have a predicament every Halloween I’m sure many other families experience. With the number of spooky movies available, how do you decide which ones are appropriate for the whole family? It’s not always easy to figure out which films have enough “fright” to keep your kids engaged without terrifying them for months to come. And, when we get it wrong, we usually end up with a crowded bed by 1 a.m. To avoid kids waking you up in the middle of the night because you chose poorly, here’s our list of kid-appropriate creepy classics to get your kids into the Halloween spirit. ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Did you know that before Hallmark and Coke changed the Christmas season, ghost stories were a major part of Christmas? Well, that’s something you get with one of Tim Burton’s best films for young audiences. The movie is full of unforgettable characters, like Jack the Pumpkin King, whose curiosity leads to the kidnapping of Santa Claus; Sally, the rag doll whose love saves Christmas; and, of course, Oogie Boogie, the boogeyman who does his own usurping. And don’t forget the songs because “This Is Halloween” will be stuck in your head until Thanksgiving — in a good way. So, is this a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Who cares? (Okay, shrunken heads as Christmas presents makes it a Halloween movie …) We know it’s a fun movie that teaches that, while imagination may be boundless, you should still be grateful for what you have. (Oh, maybe it’s a Thanksgiving movie!) “With the number of spooky movies available, how do you decide which ones are appropriate for the whole family?” ‘Goosebumps’ 2015 If you were a fan of the classic “Goosebumps” books and TV show as a kid, this is the perfect movie for your family. The Marvel movies could take a lesson from the fan service in this film. You get to see all your favorite R.L. Stine creations come to life as they try to defeat the illustrious writer and take over the world! The visual effects will keep your kids engaged while Jack Black’s character and the cast of

monsters will keep you laughing and reminiscing over those classic books you once loved. You can also take this as an opportunity to point out your childhood monster favorites to your kids and share the love you have for the spooky season. ‘Coraline’ If you’re a Neil Gaiman fan, “Coraline” is a must-see for you and your family. It’s a great introduction to the wonder of his storytelling and the valuable lessons that lie below the surface of his narratives. In the movie, while Coraline explores her new home, she discovers a door to a parallel world that seems a bit better than her own in several ways. Coraline is fascinated by this new world until she realizes the new world isn’t as marvelous as she initially thought. It’s a fantastic tale about the importance of family and will surely be a classic your kids will cherish for years to come. These are just some of the great Halloween movies we love sharing with our kids. If you have any you watch with your family, let me know! We’re always looking for the next kid-friendly spooky movie to watch together as we get closer to Halloween.
