Finally the inquirer, Frank, turned to the counselor and said, “ I think I should take some more time to think this over. There are some things about it that I am not sure I understand.” The counselor felt cer tain that Frank was just trying to put off making a decision, so he said, “What are some of the things you don’t understand? Maybe I can help you.” This brought another pause. Frank was not even sure what it was he didn’t understand. T h e counselor asked, “ Is it the Bible you don’t un derstand or that you don’t believe?” “ No,” was the reply, “ I believe the Bible.” “Well, then,” said the coun selor, “ let’s just go over some of the important truths about a person’s need of Christ and how he can receive Christ as Saviour.” The counselor turned to Romans 3: 23 and Frank read, “ For all have sin ned and come short.of the glory of God.” The next verse was Romans 6 : 23, “ For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Then he turned to John 1:12, “ But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” “ That last verse is prettx clear and definite, isn’t it?” the coun selor asked. “Yes, I understand mat quite well,” Frank replied. “Are you ready then, upon your understanding of this verse, to ask God’s forgiveness and have Christ come into your life?” Frank had arrived at the moment of decision. The counselor continued, “Are you willing to pray and ask God to do this for you?” Finally a sincdte “Yes,” was the answer. Frank received Christ and became a new person in Him. This counselor was helpful. He didn’t rely upon his own wisdom, logic or arguments. He knew that this transaction was brought about by God and the inquirer. He also was very patient. God says faith comes by hear ing and hearing by the Word of God. The counselor believed God’s Word. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will, through the Word, bring con viction. “And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, a n d of judgment” (John 16:8). Guiding an inquirer to this place of decision is the important responsi bility of a spiritual counselor.
