people did not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and had resorted to stealing in order to add to their mea ger living. Their little mud house with thatch roof sat on a hillside where it was difficult to grow even enough garden food for the family. Carmen and Rosita, the young daughters, helped pound and grind com for the biscuits which they had with black coffee each morning for breakfast. Neither of the girls had ever been to school and they knew nothing of how to play games or have a good time as the children did up in the mission. A few months passed and then God began to answer prayer for Lorenzo’s family in an unexpected way. One day his wife came to the school and waited shyly for an opportunity to speak with the wife of Senor Thomas. She said she wanted to ask a favor; she understood that some of the Bible School students conducted classes dur ing afternoon hours for children in the neighborhood who wished to learn to read and write. “Would it be poss ible,” she asked, “for Carmen and Rosita to attend school?” With rejoicing in her heart, Señora Marta answered that the girls could come providing they complied with the rules of the school. “ One of our requirements,” she ex plained, “ is that in order to be includ ed as students in weekday classes, the pupils must also attend Sunday School each Sunday morning to re ceive instruction from the Word of God.” Lorenzo’s wife agreed to these terms and hurried back to tell the news to the girls. Carmen and Rosita enrolled in the school and soon began learning to read and write. They also were taught God’s standards and His loving pro vision for the salvation of their souls through the death of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. At first they were hes itant about receiving Him and said that their parents told them they must leave home and live with the missionaries if they became Christians. This was not possible. As the weeks and months passed by, however, the entrance of the Word brought light into their darkened hearts. They trust ed the One who could and would for give their sins. Soon the parents also were attending services in God’s house. God graciously answered the prayer of the missionaries by saving precious souls —- yes, souls of infinite more worth than a few sacks of stolen potatoes!
