William G. ’23 and Elya B. ’23 Scherer, Lima, Peru, South America: “ The Lord has called out a people for His Name and in June we organized The Baptist Church of La Victoria, with fourteen charter members. At the second anniversary serv ice commemorating the opening of the Sala Bautista there were 90 in attendance. During the year, 33 made professions of faith. The larger attendance at the mid week service obliged us to confine Wednes days to Bible study and to hold the prayer meeting on Friday. Over twenty attend the latter and all take part in prayer. The children still face punishment for attend ing Sunday school, but our numbers often reach forty. The literature distribution has continued. W e are due for a furlough at the end of 1961. There is no one in sight to relieve us.” Norman ’42 and Florence ’40, Allens- worth, Los Angeles, California. Norman is Superintendent of the Jewish Depart ment of the Church of the Open Door and the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Florence Turner ’30, ’32, Venezuela, South America: “ Souls have been saved during the 19th Convention of the Evan gelical Church of Eastern Venezuela. The first night the meeting was held in the church, but there was such a crowd that many had to stand in the street, so the next night the Mission tent was put up and both places were filled. About 109 made decisions.” Glenn ’53 and Mary ’54 Irwin, Vene zuela: “We had a real fine spiritual ra dio broadcast with the choir from the church here in Maturin singing special music.” Don ’56 and Barbara (Cates ’57) Brown, Tanganyika, Africa: “ The people have a great desire to read. W e do have other responsibilities with the language studies. W e have charge of five primary schools. John ’40 and Mary (David ’40) Dédríck, Mexico: “ Our main work has been that of making out a check list of concepts that are important and yet difficult to ex press in Yaqui. The Bible teaching minis try has continued in several places. There were opportunities to assist at two differ ent Bible Conferences in the area.” Janice Dodson ’59 SMM and Phyllis Walker ’59 SMM, Australia: “W e are learning much as we help young Aus tralians and New Zealanders master the basic principles of descriptive linguistics. Phyllis is a grammar teacher, and that does not mean English grammar. She is helping her students leam how to analyze the grammar of any new language. And I am working on the Phonemics staff. That subject might be called ‘alphabetics,’ as it deals with the principles of making a workable alphabet for a heretofore illit erate people.” They will serve in New Guinea.
