JONKERS RARE BOOKS

Arthur Rackham Born in London, Arthur Rackham began his career selling drawings to newspapers and periodicals. He quickly established himself as an illustrator of boy’s adventure stories, for which he produced fairly uninspiring black and white drawings. In 1905, William Heinmann commissioned him to produce 51 watercolours to illustrate Rip Van Winkle . The book, aimed at the Christmas gift market, was produced in a sumptuous format and its launch coincided with an exhibition selling the watercolours at the Leicester Galleries. Reviews and sales were exceptional, and a new era of book illustration had begun. Arthur Rackham’s career moved onto a totally different plane and over the following decades he worked at an astounding rate, pro- ducing his distinctive illustrations to books ranging from fairy tales to Shakespeare plays; from children’s novels, such a Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland to the works of Dickens, Ibsen and Goldsmith. Rackham was a celebrated artist, whose work was much in demand.

His earnings far exceeded those of his contemporaries, and he had a shrewd eye for ways to maximize his income, for example sell- ing sketches and embellishing books with humorous vignettes. His work is known for its extensive use of humour; his fantastical elfin creatures; the haunting anthropomorphic trees, dainty fairies and his caricatured self-portraits.

ARTHUR RACKHAM

VELLUCENT BINDING BY CEDRIC CHIVERS 6. RACKHAM, Arthur; WASHINGTON, Irving RIP VAN WINKLE Heinemann, 1905. First edition. 4to. Finely bound by Cedric Chivers, c.1905, stamp signed to rear turn in. Full green morocco, with five inlaid vel - lucent panels, containing miniature watercolours reproducing Rackham’s imagery painted on vellum. The upper cover is fur- ther decorated with an Art Nouveau design in gilt and two circu- lar green morocco onlays, accentuated by gilt punched dots. The smooth spine is decorated with Art Nouveau gilt decoration and circular amber morocco onlay. Single line gilt border on covers and a heart-shaped gilt design to the rear. Gilt ruled turn-ins and patterned endpapers. All edges gilt. Fifty-one colour plates by Rackham are mounted onto green art paper and protected by tissue guards: apart from the frontis they are all mounted together at the end of the text. One of the double page plates has a slight corner crease to the white border. A very good copy indeed of this extraordinary production, morocco binding with very slight rubs to the joints, slight fading to some panels and occasional foxing to the prelim- inary and terminal pages. [40114] £3,000 Cedric Chivers introduced these “vellucent” style bindings in order to assist the production of beautiful hand painted watercolour bindings, which prior to this point had been subject to damage, smudging and wear. The new process involved painting an image in ink and watercolour on paper and then a thin layer of stretched vellum was laid over to seal the illustration, thus protecting the painting. Gilt decoration, lettering and borders were then embossed onto the covers. Most Vellucent bindings were designed by H. Granville Fell with the paintings done by one of a group of 5 women, Dorothy Carleton Smyth, Alice Shepherd, Miss J.D. Dunn, Muriel Taylor, and Agatha Gales. In many cases the name of the artist is not advertised.

7. RACKHAM, Arthur; CARROLL, Lewis ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND William Heinemann, [1907]. First Rackham edition. Edition de Luxe, one of 1100 copies printed on handmade paper. Large 4to. Publisher’s full white buckram, with gilt titles and vignettes. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Housed in publisher’s original card slipcase. Pictorial endpapers. Thirteen colour plates mounted onto brown art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. In addition there are lots of charming line drawings. A very near fine, clean copy, with just a hint of toning to the spine and the odd spot to contents, but exceptionally clean by the standards of this book. The book protected by the slightly edge worn original slipcase. [45289] £4,000 The story of Alice had a special resonance with Rackham, as he wrote, “My experiences of the book are absolutely delightful... it was read aloud to us (3 about the same age, 11, 10, 9) sat by my father & and at once became a household word... It is possible that my father’s appreciation of it helped us children too. It was read with full dramatic effect, the songs sung and so forth”. Certainly Rackham’s Alice is beautifully drawn, fresh faced and rosy cheeked, her sense of wonder clearly apparent. Carroll’s fantasy world is perfectly suited to Rackham’s humour and vivid imagination, making this a most appealing interpretation of Alice.

[44557] £450 Rackham’s illustrations to this tale are hauntingly beautiful. The 1909 Christmas Bookman review of this volume reads, “The story of Undine, the water-spirit, and the Knight of Huldbrand who wedded her, seems to have been waiting for Mr Rackham’s brush... There could have been, perhaps, no more fitting theme for all the imaginative beauty and force of his work than this weird and beautiful romance.” Of the tale itself, George MacDonald wrote “Were I asked, what is a fairytale? I should reply, Read Undine; that is a fairytale... of all fairy- tales I know, I think Undine the most beautiful.”

Elephant folio (19 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches). Publisher’s full vellum with gilt titles to upper cover. Housed in publisher’s original cloth box with printed paper onlay. Twelve large full size plates mount- ed with gilt ruled borders and captioned tissue guards by Rackham. The original box is clean and attractive, lacking a side panel to lower section. [46103] £12,500 The portfolio is without doubt, Rackham’s grandest production and one of the rarest and most beautiful books of its type. Rackham’s plates for Peter Pan originally appeared in 1906 in the form of a gift book with fifty Rackham plates. Partly to capitalise on the success of the stage production of Peter & Wendy, Hodder asked Rackham to select his favourite twelve of the fifty images in the 1906 Peter Pan to produce a collector’s portfolio of plates. These plates were re-engraved to be the size of the original watercolours and produced to an extremely fine standard.

ARTHUR RACKHAM

39. RACKHAM, Arthur; Grahame, Kenneth THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS By Kenneth Grahame New York, The Limited Editions Club, 1940. First edition illustrated by Rackham. Large 4to. Number 1411 of 2,020 copies, signed by Bruce Rogers, the book’s designer. Cream cloth spine with gilt lettering, paper covered boards with patterned design, preserved in publisher’s glassine and green card slipcase. Top edge gilt. Publisher’s pamphlet explaining the context of the book’s publication loosely inserted. Sixteen colour illustrations by Rackham. Introduction by A. A. Milne. A fine copy, two tiny closed tears to the bottom of page 120, in a chipped glassine and a very good slipcase. [45616] £1,750 This was Rackham’s last project and he worked on the watercolours through illness and up to his death. It is the only one of his major works to be first published posthumously. This edition of the book is the only one to include all sixteen colour illustrations, as the first trade and the English edition (published some eleven years later) features only twelve colour illustrations. Grahame initially wanted Arthur Rackham to illustrate The Wind In The Willows, but Rackham declined. Around thirty years later, Elspeth Grahame invited Rackham for a walk along the Thames to view the many places and sights which inspired the stories lovingly created by her now deceased husband (d. 1932). He finally accepted and, amid the outbreak of WWII and personal illness, prepared a series of sixteen illustrations and several line drawings for the tale. This was his last project. Upon completion, the dying artist is said to have sunk into his pillow and said: “Thank goodness, that is the last one” (Hares-Stryker). His drawings were published posthumously in this limited first edition.
