an angel. Even his enemies were im pressed. There ought to be more radiant Christians among us today. Difficult cir cumstances should not hinder the out ward manifestation of the believer’s in ward glory. Remember Paul’s singing epistle was written while he was in prison (Philippians). Stephen Ushered Into Paradise 7:54-60 Following his apprehension Stephen bore witness to his faith in 7:2-53. This is the longest recorded sermon in the New Testament. It brought conviction to all who heard it (54). It cut their hearts like a sword. But, rather than ac cept the truth, they put Stephen to death. In connection with his death, he saw the glory of Christ (w . 55,56). Jesus was seen standing as if to en courage his faithful servant, whereas, Jesus is usually seen seated (cf. Heb. 1:3). Stephen also died like Christ (v. 60). Helps for the Children The Story of a Brave Man Acts 6:8-15; 7:57-60 Memory Verse: “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear” (Heb. 13:6). As the early church grew in numbers, there was much work to be done in caring for the poor, visiting the sick, etc. The apostles felt that they must have helpers in order that God’s work might be well done. They asked the church to choose seven godly men to serve with them as leaders in the church. Among the men who were chosen was Stephen, who, “full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.” As Stephen served his Lord, wicked men stirred up the people by saying that they had heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. They brought Stephen be fore their godless religious leaders and had men accuse him of many lies. Those who watched Stephen as he was being falsely accused noticed that his face looked like the face of an angel. The Holy Spirit gave to Stephen a powerful message for these wicked Jews. They became so angry that they cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. Rather than deny his Lord that his life might be saved, Stephen was true to his Saviour. Just before he died, he prayed that his enemies might be for given their sin of killing him. Then, the first Christian to die for his Lord, went to be with Him in heaven. Some Christian boys and girls refuse to testify for their Lord or to tell others that they are Christians for fear that their friends may laugh at them, call them “ sissies,” etc. The courage of Stephen will be theirs if they will say with Paul, “ The Lord is my helper; I will not fear [be afraid].” ☆ I know not how that Bethlehem Babe Could in the Godhead be: I only know the Manger Child Hath brought G od 's life to me. ☆ ☆
