When faced with an unknown situation, you have a choice to respond with fear or faith. It is just like asking a horse to cross water for the first time. The horse does not know how deep the water is or the best way to get across the water safely. A fearful horse might have an extreme response when approaching the water; however, a faithful horse takes a deep breath and approaches the obstacle one step at a time. When faced with uncertainty, be the faithful horse. Take it one day at a time. Phil Haugen Horsemanship post shared March 16 by Hailey Lockwood

ONE FOR THE BUCKET LIST

Pozzi Tonozzi finally adds elusive San Antonio victory to career resume By Neal Reid

A fter years of dreaming and several close calls, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi was finally able to add the elusive San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo title to her Hall of Fame worthy resume. On Feb. 22, the two-time world champion barrel racer was triumphant at one of the crown jewels of the sport, enjoying an accomplishment that was nearly 20 years in the making. Aboard her 9-year-old mare Babe on The Chase, whom she calls “Birdie,” Pozzi Tonozzi stopped the clock in 14.02 seconds to tie Jill Wilson in the championship finals of the bracket-style rodeo and add yet another feather in her cap. “That’s definitely been a bucket list rodeo for me and everyone, and I’d gotten so close in the past with Duke,” said Pozzi Tonozzi, the 2007 and 2009 world champion. “After he went down, I hadn’t had a horse I felt would fit that building well, and it turns out now I have two.” Pozzi Tonozzi grew up attending the prestigious rodeo, and after the barrel racing bug bit her as a pre-teen, winning San Antonio developed into a career goal. “My parents would take us to the rodeo for the entertainment, and we’d watch the rodeo, too,” said Pozzi Tonozzi, who joined the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association in 2003. “I didn’t start running barrels until I was about 12, and it became a dream

(to win it) the older I got.” She rode her 7-year-old chestnut mare Ima Famous Babe “Katniss” in Bracket 5 of that portion of the million-dollar rodeo, then climbed aboard Birdie for the semifinals and finals. Pozzi Tonozzi and Katniss finished third in the first two rounds, then won the third round in 14.02 seconds to march onward. “I think I won third in the first two rounds, so I felt like if I just won a check that would be good enough,” said Pozzi Tonozzi, of Lampasas, Texas. “I ended up winning the round.” Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) judges stopped the barrel racing during the first round of Semifinal 2 due to unsafe ground conditions, and the cowgirls regrouped to run again the next day after the surface was re-worked. From then on, it was a fierce battle among the nation’s best barrel racers. “Thankfully, the judges stopped the rodeo, and we ran the next morning and the ground was great,” Pozzi Tonozzi said. “The girls enjoyed running on nice, fresh ground.” From there, the talented cowgirl guided Birdie to victory in 13.91 seconds of the second round of Semifinal 2 before tying Wilson – who earned $23,250 in San Antonio to move to fourth place in the world standings – for the overall crown. Pozzi Tonozzi pocketed $23,500 for her big win and was thrilled to flourish despite the rodeo’s grueling format.

on right now, and we’re all a little frustrated because all of these rodeos are getting canceled. “I’m just thankful I got to win a lot at the beginning and am not playing catchup right now.” Pozzi Tonozzi is always busy developing young horses, and the fact that Katniss and Birdie are two mares she has brought along from the start makes their success so far this season extra special. “It’s nice. These are all horses I raised and trained, and they’ve been waiting in the wings and have been trying to get everything perfected,” said Pozzi Tonozzi, one of just eight women in WPRA history with more than $2 million in career earnings. “It came together this winter.” The forced break in the action may be frustrating, but Pozzi Tonozzi is using her time wisely. “I am OK with it,” she said. “We’re taking a break. We wish we would’ve gotten to compete at Houston, but we’re going to take a break and get ready for whenever they decide to start having more rodeos. “Now, I get to rest my horses, get all my embryos pulled and do all that. It is frustrating, but it’s also kind of a nice break. Now, I’m training 3-year-olds.”

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi called upon two of her self-made horses to get the win at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo which had eluded her until 2020. Aboard her 9-year-old mare Babe on The

Seeing her horses develop and thrive is the rewarding part of the hard work Pozzi Tonozzi puts into her horse operation on a daily basis. Always up for a challenge, she still loves the thrill of the ticking clock and matching up against the sport’s best on the grandest stages. “I think just the competition,” Pozzi Tonozzi said of what keeps her going strong. “Barrel racing is a humbling sport. You can be on top of the world one day and the bottom of the barrel, literally, the next. “I think it’s just the competition that keeps all of us hungry for more.”

“Heck, you can’t go to a rodeo without it being tough,” she said. “In some ways, it makes it a little easier to advance all the way to the finals, and in some ways it makes it a little bit harder. If you start off on a good note, it seems pretty easy, but if you don’t do very well in the first couple rounds, then you’re looking for a round win in the third round and that can be tough.” million-dollar rodeo, then climbed aboard Birdie for the semifinals and finals. Pozzi Tonozzi’s San Antonio triumph was just the latest in a string of impressive wins for the 13-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. She won the average in San Angelo, Texas, aboard Katniss with a 44.15-second total to bank $13,676 and had earned a good check for placing in Jackson, Mississippi, as well. The result: the two-time Wrangler NFR average winner (2006- 07) and two-time RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo champion (2012-13) vaulted to the top of the WPRA World Standings with $59,888 through March 9. With all major sports suspended in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, Pozzi Tonozzi is happy to be in the No. 1 spot. “I was really excited,” she said of taking over the world standings lead. “I didn’t get to run at Houston before they canceled it. So, I’m glad I’ve got a lot won because nobody knows what’s going

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi had long dreamt of getting to ride around the arena as the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Champion and that dream came true this past February. She captured the title after amassing $23,500 in earnings to Jill Wilson’s $23,250. Photo by Robby Freeman

REPEAT VICTORY Sharpie Back on Top in Tucson By Kristen M. White T hree years ago, Stevi Hillman ran a young, green horse at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Arizona, and found an unexpected victory there. This year, Hillman and the same horse, Sharpie, teamed up for another win in the same arena. “I love winning the same rodeo on the same horse. It’s so sentimental to me,” Hillman said. “It was really special!” In 2017, Hillman and Sharpie’s success was a bit of a surprise, since he had just come from the futurity ranks and hadn’t really run outdoors at all. He was in Hillman’s trailer to get some seasoning. This year, the story was a bit different. At 8, Sharpie (MCM ImASharpGuy) handled things like a champ, and Hillman obviously has many more runs aboard the little grey gelding, too.

Sharpie had a stifle surgically repaired last year and was out for several months to heal. Hillman started running him again just before the NFR last year, and she said it’s great to see him feeling so good. “He came back feeling a little more honest than he’d ever been, so it was cool to feel that, that he’s feeling so good,” she said. Hillman was torn on which of her horses to take to Tucson. She told herself if her other trusty horse, Truck, did well in San Antonio that she’d leave him there and take Sharpie to Tucson, and that’s how it worked out. They were up in Tuesday morning slack for the first round, and then Hillman had to fly back to San Antonio to run in the semifinals. “I would say that first round in Tucson was one of the best runs I’ve ever had on Sharpie,” she said. “He was smooth and easy to get around the barrels.” They finished in 17.19 seconds, and no one else would come close to their time, with Lisa Lockhart finishing second in 17.32 seconds, followed by Emily Miller and Haley Wolfe tied for third in 17.43 seconds. The final round wasn’t until Sunday, so there was a lot of time in

between runs and Hillman had to leave to get back to San Antonio. Friend Jackie Ganter offered to keep Sharpie and ride him a couple of days so Hillman could do both. “Sharpie is easy going on how you ride him and Jackie did a wonderful job,” Hillman said. “Me being off of him that long hindered him a little bit – with any horse to make the best run possible you have to be on their back more – and that was a lot of time in between. But I was so thankful for Jackie’s help.” Warming up for the finals, Hillman said she could tell Sharpie was riled up and going to be a bit of a handful, so she was preparing mentally to do everything she could to keep the barrels up. It had rained and the ground was heavy. Hillman said she knew it was safe, but wasn’t going to be fast. While she laughed and said their finals run was not one of their best ever – “I was happy to just get around all three barrels!” she said – their time of 17.78 seconds proved tough to beat. In the end, they outlasted the other competitors to win that round as well. It gave Hillman a combined time of 34.97 seconds on two runs, ahead of Miller in 35.29 seconds. Winning, especially given the added challenges of the long time in between runs and differences in ground, left Hillman feeling “incredibly blessed to be back on Sharpie and win that rodeo twice. “Sharpie has such a funny personality and he makes us smile,” she said. “People see his picture and he’s got a cute head and big eyes and his ears are perked and he looks so cute and sweet – and he can be sweet but also very ornery! I’m proud of him for handling Tucson like a champ.” Having qualified for the NFR for the past four years, the ultimate goal will of course be to make it back in 2020. However, Hillman said she plans for the season “big picture but also short-term,” knowing Stevi Hillman and MCM ImaSharpGuy took home their second career title from La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Arizona. The duo teamed together for the win in 2017 during Sharpie’s rookie rodeo season. Photo by Dan Hubbell

Stevi Hillman noted that the first round in Tucson was one of her best runs ever on Sharpie and it showed in the time of 17.19 seconds, to blow away the field. Lisa Lockhart would be the closest in a time of 17.32 seconds. That first round run set-up the duo to take home the title. Photo by Dan Hubbell

SPONSOR

We are Total Control. From a Sports Bra.

Here’s what we think. Women of all shapes and sizes should be able to move freely. Comfortably. Un-self-consciously. To wake up, kick ass and repeat. We are not a fashion statement. We aren’t in this to turn heads or get likes. We are in this to power through. So that all women, can run like they were born to. Work out like they mean it. Sweat like they were made to. We are the only bra with Zip. Cinch. Lift. Adjustability. You control the fit. You control the level of support. Adjustable rib band and shoulder straps for personalized fit and control. Sizes A-I. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

“The amount of support it offers is amazing! I used to have to wear two bras for only a fraction of what this offers. It can securely accommodate the large difference between my bust and chest measurements. I finally feel comfortable and not embarrassed and self-conscious at the gym.” – Alissa K.

I participate in Bootcamp, softball, and weightlifting, but spent half my time adjusting my bra after doing a move. Not anymore, SHEFIT allows me to focus on form instead of my outfit! Thank you for creating a comfortable bra that works as hard as I do! – Amy R.

Love these bras...I have 2 now and the whole velcro thing = amazing! I have a huge chest like 44” with a 36” band size so the fact these can hold me down is unreal. It’s not like you’re stuck with a uniboob either, it squishes you down evenly. Highly recommend for that extra support at the gymnasium ;)) – Maria Z.

HORSE GEAR prochampionhorsegear.com

We are kickass performance gear for women who refuse to settle. SHEFIT was born out of one woman’s refusal to settle for inadequate sports bra support. A professional fitness competitor, Sara Marie had tried all of the so-called best bras on the market. Bras that promised the latest in technology and support but still failed to curb the bounce. Bras that looked nice in the mirror but failed in action. (Sara Photo) Armed with a glue gun and fierce determination she created the SHEFIT Ultimate Sports BraÔ with Zip. Cinch. Lift patented adjustability and revolutionary 2-way stretch.

APRIL 2020 WPRA NEWS 21

BREEDING SHED Three Bars By Shawne & KG Azure Winnin Chex By Bonnie Wheatley T wo lifelong barrel racers,Amber Bruce of AQHA registered foals, but the West’s are seeing all the traits that first drew them to take the gamble on him in their first personal foal crop out of their barrel bred mares.

West recently sold the Three Bars By Shawne filly out of the Jess Vegas mare to Lisa Novak and looks forward to seeing what that partnership will produce. Three Bars By Shawne is complementing the West’s small but solid broodmare program, which has been their end goal all along. “Our first crop from him came in 2019,” said Amber. “They’re gray, they have very good conformation, they’re straight legged, correct, smart and kind like he is, they’ve all got black feet and so far have been just extremely user-friendly, confident horses. They are very confident horses.” Amber is pleased to have all fillies born so far and hopes that Three Bars By Shawne proves to ultimately be a mare sire for their program since his years of standing at stud are limited. With Three Bars By Shawne’s prolific genetics, including Hall Of Fame grandsire Three Bars who was inducted in 1989, odds are in their favor. As for Shawne Bug, his grand-get have earned over $12 million in race earnings and over $67,000 in futurities, and countless thousands more in barrel racing at every level. As to why they chose to enroll Three Bars By Shawne in the WPRA Pro Elite Sire Incentive program, Amber says she likes the fact that progeny are eligible to earn PESI bonus money throughout the course of their entire career. “It’s money well-spent,” she said. “And the foals are eligible for their whole life for that bonus money, not just their futurity or derby years, it’s everything from the futurities on up to the rodeos. It’s hard for a stallion owner to keep up with all the incentive programs out there because it becomes very costly, so I had to look at what would make the best sense in our area especially. We have several races in our region where you can win a good bonus check by having an eligible horse.” Amber adds that her allegiance to the WPRA comes in part from how closely tied she has been to the association as a third generation barrel racer. “I stumbled upon him on a Facebook page,” said Amber, adding that she forwarded Three Bars By Shawne’s information to her friend Dena (Driggers) Milner for her opinion. “She told me, ‘You’ll never find another like him.’ We took a leap of faith basically. Three Bars
