“I paint first, and drawafter – then layer after layer of paint is applied with fingers and

He claims not to be inspired by any one artistic style, but more general everyday experiences around him, although he acknowledges the inspiration of the black and white wildlife artist Gary Hodges, the figurative artist Mark Demsteader, as well as portrait giants Caravaggio and Lucien Freud. Working in black and white was also a decision that was taken for financial reasons, with Maiden choosing the most cost effective materials over expensive oils. Ironically the economic restraints served to create his signa- ture monochrome style. “I paint first, and draw thumbs” he explains. Maiden likes to use a mixture of materials – a combination of acrylic, ink, graphite and raw pigment which gives a textured and definitive style.

In characteristically down to earth form, he is celebrating his recent success by moving from the garden shed to what he calls a ‘proper studio’ – the classic rite of passage for any established artist, of which Maiden now joins the ranks.
