28 Stuart McAlpine Miller
T he unmistakable, always tantalising work of Stuart McAlpine Miller takes a step in a slightly different direction in this new collection of five striking images of iconic women. In 'Commotion' , conveying Keira Knightley, 'Developing The Nation' depicting Naomi Campbell, 'Striking The Pose' featuring Madonna, 'The Origins Of Woman Kind' , portraying Marilyn Monroe, and ' Three Vital Steps Forward' picturing Lady Gaga, McAlpine Miller has deliberately concentrated entirely on the celebrities' faces, which for him is a very recent development in his work. "Their face is what they are known for, how we recognise them, and everything else is secondary," said McAlpine Miller. "So I de- cided to make faces the focus of the pieces. But what we look at isn't who they are. What we see and know about them is largely led by the media, who can elevate someone one moment and all but destroy them the next. The reality is that they are not demi gods but real people who eat, drink, breathe, laugh and cry the same as everyone else." His brilliant signature layering technique and clever positioning of light and colour are as visually compelling as ever, with the illusion of transparency drawing the viewer in and conning the eye. "What I wanted to portray on several levels is that what we see isn't always the reality," says McAlpine Miller. "There is the illusion of the paint but I've also tried to suggest the illusion of the women – sensational new EYECONS collection hones in on the face of celebrity FACE VALUE Stuart McAlpine Miller's
