1 Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st 1926, and would have celebrated her eighty- eighth birthday this year. She died on 4th August 1962 aged 36, just two weeks after the photographs taken by George Barris. 2 After signing to 20th Century Fox, she appeared in a number of B movies, before she starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1953 which launched her as a sex symbol superstar. Other big hits included The Sever Year Itch, Bus Stop, The Misfits and The Prince and the Showgirl. 3 Marilyn Monroe was married and divorced three times in her short life, notably to Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio and prominent playwright Arthur Miller. She never had any children, although reputedly pregnant three times, and died alone.
