APR Expands Program To Recognize Sustainable Packaging Solutions The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) recently an- nounced updates to the APR Design for Recyclability Rec- ognition Program, adding new packaging components that are now eligible for Preferred Design Recognition (PDR.) There are several different paths to achieve APR De- sign Recognition, including PDR, but all paths confirm that a package or packaging component has met the highest criteria for recyclability according to the APR Design Guide. PDR is now available for 24 packaging components, in- cluding the following new items: Blow Molded PET Bottles and Containers; PET Packaging Constructs; Natural and Colored HDPE Bottles and Containers; and Mono-Material PE Stretch and Collation Shrink Films. APR Design Recognition helps component and pack- aging manufacturers meet clients’ goals for recyclable packaging. It provides third-party validation that a pack- age or packaging component’s design is compatible with the North American recycling system. Brand and retailer procurement teams can save the time, effort and resources needed to identify and validate recyclable packaging through the APR Library of Recog- nized Solutions. The recently upgraded library now in- cludes search, sort, and filter capabilities. New products are now included in real time, with ongoing additional im- provements in searchability and categorization.

Schur Installs 10-Color Flexo Press

Schur Star Systems Australia has installed and commis- sioned a new Windmoeller & Holscher Miraflex 10-color flexographic press, the first of its kind in Australia. The new press is part of a $25 million investment at the company’s Melbourne production facility, aimed to meet growing demand for the company’s flexible packaging solutions. On the traditional flexibles supply side, the Schur port- folio — which comprises the bulk of its Australian business — includes printed laminates, lidding films, and pouches. It is this part of the business that the company says will see growth because of the new 10-color flexo press, which has a gravure inline unit. The new W&H Miraflex press incorporates electric driven hot water drying, rather than traditional gas, which combined with the solar panel installation, ensures the most efficient use of energy, says Schur. The new flexo press joins a long-serving Uteco flexo press on the floor, but with double the capacity of the old press, it significantly ramps up Schur’s printing and con- verting capability. Schur’s Australian operations were es- tablished when the Danish Schur group purchased Bur- gess Printing & Packaging in 2016, as it sought to expand the footprint of its proprietary Schur Star concept into the ANZ region.
