The Pittman CONNECTION The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body FOOTBALL Is Back!!!
We have had a couple of nights that make me feel like it’s already fall — 68 with a sweatshirt is FOOTBALL WEATHER! We have a few more weeks of heat, but that little bit of chill was amazing. And, of course, you know by now that Foster is playing football for Collierville, so I am doubly excited. Brinkley and Foster don’t really enjoy the fall as much as I do. Mainly because high school starts at 7:30 in the morning. After sleeping in all summer, this is a bit of a change. Especially for Brinkley. This is her first year of high school. She was used to getting to school at 8:15 and leaving the house at 8. (We live directly across the street from the middle school). Speaking of Brinkley… she just turned 15. Holy smokes, that was fast. She was just a sassy little 4-year-old painting her face blue to look like a smurf. She is still dancing. She is taller than Sophie though. Kinda weird. She just took some headshots and looks 17. I am not ready to do this again. Teenage girls, dating, boys, makeup, the whole thing is a little stressful for a dad. But, I don’t really have a choice. I just told Sophie, adulting is hard. Speaking of Sophie, we got to spend a lot of time with her this summer. She came home and hung out with us for a bit. She and I had another road trip. We rented a Penske Truck and drove it to New York to furnish her new apartment. She is back with the Knicks again this year and has a lot more space. She is moving from a studio to a 4-bedroom apartment with 3 roommates. I got to help set it up and do

help you resume your normal activities. If your hip or knee pain limits you from living the life you want, don’t hesitate to contact Pittman Physical Therapy as soon as possible. We’ll help you get moving freely once again! What Causes Hip and Knee Pain? There are many reasons why you may be experiencing hip or knee pain. Some of the most common causes include: • Arthritis. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common causes of hip and knee pain. Arthritis causes inflammation of the joints and can lead to a quicker breakdown of cartilage in the hips. This can lead to pain or stiffness with movement. • Tears and ruptures. There are ligaments and cartilage in the hips and knees that are susceptible to injury, including tearing. Tears to ligaments leave the joints unstable, while cartilage tears typically affect your range of motion. Most tears result from some trauma or sports-related accident.
Do you have pain in your hips or knees when trying to enjoy leisurely walks, climbing stairs, or bending down to retrieve a dropped item? Hip and knee pain can limit your ability to perform and enjoy daily activities. Fortunately, at Pittman Physical Therapy, our therapists can teach you how to find relief and get back to doing what you love! Your hips are ball and socket joints, meaning that your femur (thigh bone) fits perfectly into your pelvis (hip socket.) There is a cushion of cartilage in your hips that helps prevent friction as your hip bone moves within the socket. The knee joint is also one of the most complicated joints in the body, as it has to bear up to 6 times your body weight when running or jumping. This incredible joint is vital for walking, stairs, and bending or kneeling movement. This is also why things can go wrong, resulting in injury and pain. Pain ensues if the cartilage wears down or is damaged due to age or injury. It is also possible for the muscles and tendons surrounding the hip and knee to experience pain from overuse or trauma. No matter the source of pain, we offer solutions to

• Bursitis. Bursae are liquid sacs that can be found between tissues. They help ease friction from tissues running together; however, they can also become inflamed due to overuse and trauma, resulting in pain. So, if you feel achy after walking too far, it may be your body’s way of telling you you’ve done too much! • Strains and Tendonitis. Muscles or tendons can become strained and/or inflamed due to overuse and repeated activity. This causes inflammation and fraying of the tissue, resulting in pain. Although it is less common, fractures and dislocations are possible due to accidents or diseases such as cancer. This is something to keep in mind as you participate in physically demanding activities and hobbies. If you are experiencing pain from a recent slip or fall, you may be feeling the symptoms of a fracture or even a dislocation. Warm humid weather and intense high school sports practices lead to a lot of sweating and risk of heat exhaustion or more serious heat stroke. While hydration may not be at the top of the list for a successful athletic performance, it should be. Tips to Prevent Dehydration • Athletes cannot simply rely on thirst to maintain hydration. Instead, a schedule for hydration before, during, and after practice or games may be more helpful. • Weighing the athlete before and after the practices, since proper hydration will show no or minimal weight change from practice. • An example hydration schedule for a high school athlete could be drinking 16 ounces of fluid two hours before physical activity, drinking another 8-16 ounces 15 minutes before physical activity, and during physical activity, drinking 4-8 ounces every 20 minutes. After physical activity, drinking 16-24 ounces of fluid for every pound lost during physical activity. • Athletes will continue to lose fluid Fall Sports & Hydration For Young Athletes
after practice as they continue to cool their core body temperature and urinate. Using urine color as a measure for hydration status can be really helpful. Bold yellow urine to dark yellow or apple juice colored urine signifies dehydration. Athletes should aim to start every practice fully hydrated. http://caloriecontrol.org/fall-sports-and-hydration- for-young-athletes/
Football continued from cover the dad things — hang stuff, pick things up, drive the truck for 17 hours. All the things. We are getting to enjoy Stone being home for a couple of weeks, too. School starts back for him in a week. He finished up his internship in New York City in August. He says his knife skills are spot-on after working with fish all summer. He worked at a really high-end sushi restaurant. He moves back to culinary school in a few days though. We just don’t know where he is moving to… exactly. His housing assignment has changed three times. If you come into the office, you will see a lot of new faces. We are growing. I am excited to finally announce that we are moving, again. Into a space that will allow us to continue to serve this community even better. We are going to nearly double our space. We will be making more announcements soon, so follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the construction posts. — Jeremy
