W iliam would never for­ get that day when she went to the spring just outside her home town of Bezek to draw water. She had no sooner let her pail down into the shallow reservoir into which the cold mountain waters flowed when strong hands grasped both her arms and lifted her off the ground. Be­ fore she knew what was happening, a chariot came from nowhere and she was swiftly lifted into it and away they dashed in the general direction of the Jordan River and Syria. Her tearful entreaties to let her go home to her mother and father were to no avail. Her captor kept assuring her that she would not be hurt if she behaved herself but he also said he could not let her go home. “ Captain Naaman told us to get a pretty little girl to wait upon his wife and you should feel honored. You were the nicest little girl we could find near Bezek and I am sure that Naaman will be pleased with our good judgment,” he said. But Miriam did not feel the least bit happy with this explanation. She had heard of the famous cap­ tain of the Syrian army. He had

scored many victories against the Israelites. Many of her people had been killed and many more had been taken captive. Her mother and father told her many times that the reason for these terrible happenings was that Israel had forgotten God. In past times when Israel served God, great nations had tried to overcome her but God seemed to always fight for His people when they obeyed Him. That phrase kept going through her mind: “God fights for His peo­ ple when they obey Him.” She was determined that she would do her best to obey God and trust Him to protect her among these heathen folk who had destroyed so many of her people. She thought of the cruelties that these Syrians had in­ flicted upon their captives. Her heart went up to God in prayer: “Dear God, please help me to ever look to Thee for protection. These Syrians do not know Thee. Lord, help me to be ever true to Thee.” The sun was rapidly setting and as darkness swept down from the western hills and the air became uncomfortably cool, Miriam won­ dered where they would be spend­ ing the night.
