Her heart was raised to her Jehovah God in prayer. “Dear God, please give me a kind mistress. Help me to be brave and true. Keep me from denying Thee in the midst of these idol worship ers,” she prayed. They were now going down a beautiful street with the stateliest palms on either side that she had ever seen. At first they passed a shopping district with most of the wares displayed outside the open- front shops. But soon the street gave way to houses and as they con tinued up the street she noticed that the homes became lovelier. Beauti ful gardens now surrounded every house. As they came in front of the grandest yet seen they turned toward the gate. Two armed men greeted her captors as they ap proached a smaller gate that led into a hedge-bordered walk that led to the front door of the palace. A very beautiful woman, richly garbed, came out to greet them. First greeting her captors, then turning to Miriam, she smiled and said in Hebrew, “ I am your mis tress, Captain Naaman’s wife. I will show you to your quarters. There you will find new clothes. Wash and dress in one of the gar ments that you choose and then come to me and I will tell you your duties.” Days went by. One evening after she had brought her mistress her usual bedtime snack she no ticed that it was left untouched. Her mistress was in distress. What ever was the matter, Miriam won dered? “Miriam, you may take this tray to the kitchen. I shall not be eating tonight,” she said. “No, dear, there is nothing wrong with the food you brought. I suppose I should not bother telling you this but you are such an understanding little girl. You shall be told. Captain Naa man’s physician has just reported that my husband’s leprosy has got ten so much worse that he will soon be a complete invalid.
