A “W aste ” of W ater OBJECTS: A glass of cold water and a dishpan filled with dirt. LESSON: A glass of cold water such as this is very important when one is thirsty. I want to tell you about one of the most important drinks of water which was never drunk. We find the story in 1 Chronicles 11. David had just recently been made king over Israel. The Philistines were making war with Israel and David was in the cave of Adullam, a safer place for him than Jerusalem. There was a battle as told in verse 14, “ And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the L ord saved them by a great deliverance.” Verse 15 tells us, “Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam ... While these three captains were visiting him, David said, “ Oh that one would give me a drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!” Doubtless, David had been thinking about how much he had enjoyed the clear cool water from the well near Bethlehem’s gate when he was a boy. David’s three captains
men had risked their lives to grant David’s wish and had brought him the water he so much wanted. We would think that David would have drunk the precious water im mediately, but instead, “ . . . David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the L ord , And said, M y God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeop ardy? . . . ” (1 Chron. 11:18, 19). This pouring out of the precious water may have been something like the drink offering which Jacob of fered, as told in Genesis 35:14, “ And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink- offering thereon . . . .” David gave to God something that was very pre cious, and we will pour this water into this pan of dirt to show what David did. The Lord is pleased when we give our best to him. A K in g i n a C a v e OBJECT: An empty shoe box. (Cut a small doorway in the box. Color the inside black and the outside grass green.) LESSON: I want to talk to you about a king in a cave. His name was David. We will let this little box with the dark inside remind us of the cave into which David once went. We read about this in 1 Chronicles 12:1, “ Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.” It is interesting to see the kind of men which came to David to let him know that they would be on his side. Verse 1 says “mighty men.” In verse 2 we are told, “ They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left. . . .” In verse 8 we read, “And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of

heard his wish and they wanted to get him some of the water. The prob lem was increased by the fact that a part of the Philistines’ army, called a garrison, was then at Bethlehem. Regardless of the difficulties, we read, “ And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem . . . and brought it to David . . (1 Chron. 11:18). These three brave
