might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains.” The Lord Jesus Christ is today

R eading R ecords OBJECTS: Two large family Bibles in which there are family records. LESSON: Here are two Bibles. The printing is the same in each but there is something about them that is dif ferent, and the difference is not in the covers. The main difference is the family records which we find in each one between the Old and New Testaments. One is for the Smith family and the other for the Jones family. These records are very interesting in that they tell of their marriages, births, and deaths. If you should look at the record of your parents and grandparertts, it would be very inter esting. The first few chapters in the Book of 1 Chronicles deal with family rec ords. Usually when people are read ing through the Bible they either skip these chapters or read them hur riedly. We should read them care fully because God thought them im portant enough to include in the Bible. These chapters tell us of the families of King Saul, of David, of the priests, and many others. Did you ever wonder why God had the family records preserved so care fully? I want to tell you one reason. He wanted a complete family record for His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Some people have wondered why Matthew gives the family record of Joseph, Jesus’ stepfather, and Luke the family record of his mother, Mary. The ancient law of inheritance was that the sons, not the daughters, should receive their father’s inherit ance. In Numbers 27 we are told about the daughters of a man named Zelo- phehad who had no brothers, and the daughters asked Moses if they could r e c e i v e t h e i r father’s inheritance. Permission was given for them to re ceive it, but evidently some of the girls married into other tribes of Is rael and took their inheritance with them, causing their father’s tribe to be poorer. In the 36th chapter of Num bers the Lord said that in order for a girl to receive her father’s inheritance she must marry a man in her own tribe. Jesus’ family record in Mat thew and Luke shows that Mary and Joseph were of the tribe of Judah and therefore her Son, Jesus, could inherit the throne of her father, David. END.

looking for followers who are fit for the battle of life. David’s men had the faces of lions, which meant they were determined; Christ wants his followers to be people who are not easily changed from doing that which is right. David’s men were those who could move swiftly; the Lord doesn’t want his workers to lag behind and move slowly in His work. In verse 15 we are told that some of these men “went over Jordan . . . when it had overflown all his banks . . . .” They did not allow weather conditions to discourage them. In verse 18 we read, “Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. . . .” As David was a rejected ruler at this time, so Christ is not on His earthly throne, and I am sure it would please Him for us to say, “ Thine are we . . . and on thy side.”
