explore the hawk’s nest!

thank you for joining us today! Dear Families, We hope you enjoy your time on campus with us today, and we look forward to getting to know your family better. If we don’t answer all of your questions by the end of the day, please let us know! At Cathedral School for Boys, we challenge each student to think critically and engage actively. We understand that boys learn best when they’re learning by doing, and to that end, our classrooms, labs, rooftop field, music rooms, gym, drama space, and learning commons are lively centers of engagement and curiosity — and activity! Please take this afternoon to explore our school and campus, walk around and up and down, visit our different classrooms to meet and chat with our faculty, and be sure to experience all of the different activities we have organized for the whole family on each of our four floors.

We look forward to sharing our beloved school with you and your family!

Warmly,

Burns, Jacqueline, Chad, Kate & José

Manipulating Space Come experience movement in a new way! In Performing Arts, we practice the manipulation of space, which allows a good follower to be a good leader and a good leader to be a good follower. As you enter the room, there will be a movement leader. Mirror their every move and allow yourself to be led.

Then it’s your turn to lead the group! Allow the music to lead your movements and see what skills you need to lead a group through improvised movement. • Led by Mr. Joseph, Upper School Performing Arts

art for

everyone! Mandala Making Find your inner peace in the Art Room with Mandala Making! Mandalas — a geometric set of

patterns, colors, and shapes — are part of the Art curriculum at Cathedral. We use mandalas as a way to connect art and spirituality, share cultures and art from a variety of countries and places, and to practice pattern making. It is also a

nice connection to the physical space of Grace Cathedral with the labyrinth being a similar concept. Join us in making your very own, unique mandala! • Led by Ghilly DeYoung, Lower School Art, & Will Jaggers, Upper School Art

x-ed program

what is x-ed? X-ED stands for “Experiential Education,” and it’s all about real-life experiences and applications. We believe that when boys are able to go beyond the classroom and learn from real-life experiences and from experts

in various fields, their learning and their engagement is accelerated. At Cathedral, X-ED exists in various forms, from Lower School off-campus field trips to Upper School Outdoor Education programs. Take a look at our innovative programs that achieve the rich learning that can only come from exploring the city and the world beyond our classroom walls.

upper school intersession For one whole week every winter, Upper

School students (Grades 5–8) engage in classes and experiences outside of their ordinary academic schedule. This opportunity allows students to explore topics not covered in our regular academic program with faculty members who are passionate about these subjects. All classes include a significant X-ED learning component, meaning that boys do more than just listen to or read the ideas of others. Rather, students have their own first-hand

experiences as they learn by doing. Each class will also

12

cathedral school for boys

include a significant off-campus component and a final product shared with a public audience. Examples of past Intersession classes include the following: • Businesses Run by Minorities / People of Color • Let’s Make Some Dough! • Murals, Street Art & Politics • Urban Bikes • Sports Management & Operations • The Legal System • The Living Bay • The Skreech: Podcasting at Cathedral grade 8 trips Cathedral is committed to providing one

overnight trip opportunity to every student in each year in the Upper School. These trips are an important part of our program and are offered at no after-tuition cost to families. For Grade 8 students, we offer trips that serve as culminating experiences for our Spanish and Mandarin programs. The trips we have offered in the past with great success include the following:

• Mandarin Immersion Trip to Taiwan • Spanish Immersion Trip to Guatemala • Service Learning Trip to Puerto Rico The language immersion trips are specifically designed for students who have studied those languages and are run in partnership with Where There Be Dragons. Our own Upper School English teacher, Chris Corrigan, is the point person for the Puerto Rico trip, and he works in conjunction with Global Works.

grade 7 outdoor ed & leadership At Cathedral School, we believe that environmental stewardship is a crucial aspect of becoming a socially responsible citizen. We believe that the best way to instill a sense of responsibility is to expose the boys to genuine and authentic outdoor opportunities. Not only does this promote respect for nature, but it is also a valuable tool for building camaraderie among the boys. As John Muir said, “God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools.” This year’s Grade 7 Outdoor Ed and Leadership Retreat will be to the South Fork of the American River near Placerville. Our primary activities will include discussing school leadership, a high ropes course, and two days of white water rafting!

service learning At Cathedral School for Boys, we believe education extends beyond the classroom. Our Kindergarten – Grade 8 Service Learning Program is a testament to our commitment to fostering compassionate, globally aware, and socially responsible individuals. Rooted in our Episcopal values of love, service, and justice, our Service Learning Program goes beyond traditional education. It empowers our students to make a difference in the Bay Area and beyond, instilling in them a deep sense of purpose and responsibility. community engagement We are proud to be a part of the vibrant San Francisco community. Our students actively engage with local organizations, nonprofits, and San Francisco public schools to make positive impacts and develop reciprocal relationships. These experiences expose our students to different lifestyles and pressing issues, helping them become socially responsible citizens.
