Twomax — A contemporary collection of one,

Cottonyards is a landmark development situated on Old Rutherglen Road, within the popular area of New Gorbals, just south of the River Clyde. The Gorbals

FROM TENEMENTS TO TOWER BLOCKS

The Gorbals dates from at least 1285 when it was a single-street village to the south of the River Clyde. The district was acquired by the Elphinstone family in 1571 and made into a ‘Burgh of Barony and Regality’ in 1607. In 1790, the Gorbals village became the property of Glasgow Town Council and became a trendy place for those who wished to leave the old city centre. Elegant new suburbs such as Hutchesontown were developed with tenements in a modern street grid system. From the 17th century through to the 19th century, coal was mined in the area and the Gorbals became active in trades such as weaving and metal working to name but a few. By the turn of the 20th century, many tenements had become overcrowded and families were rehoused within modern high-rise tower blocks or New Towns.

The Twomax Building FROM HUTCHESONTOWN TO HARRODS

Dating from the early 1820s, the Twomax factory is the oldest surviving building in Hutchesontown, both a vestige of Glasgow’s textile industry and a symbol of the city’s cultural heritage. Originally a cotton spinning mill, it became a clothing factory during the late-nineteenth century. When the mill became vacant in the 1920s, Twomax, a fashionable knitwear company, moved in for the next 60 years. Co-owned by Hugh McClure and his brother-in-law, Donald McIntosh (the two Macs), the Twomax brand was sold in high-end department stores such as Selfridges, Harrods, and House of Fraser. In 1954, the factory employed at least five hundred female workers.

The New Gorbals FROM LOCAL DELIGHTS TO LATE NIGHTS

The New Gorbals is a highly sought-after neighbourhood with a thriving local community. Located a short distance from Glasgow’s city centre, more and more people are choosing to live in this thoughtfully re-established area south of the River Clyde. The local area is well served with amenities including a sports and leisure centre, a new health centre, nurseries, primary and high schools, a library, local shops and the Crown Street Retail Park which houses big-name retailers as well as a variety of popular food and drink venues. All of central Glasgow is within easy reach of Cottonyards. Directly over the River Clyde, Argyle Street station connects the North Clyde lines at Partick with Rutherglen in the southeast of the city, while Glasgow Central terminus is only a mile away. Along with numerous bus transport links, the Bridge Street Subway is conveniently located in nearby Laurieston.

FROM PARK RUNS TO PAVEMENT CAFÉS

Having undergone a renaissance in recent years, Glasgow Green, the oldest park in the city, is not merely a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll. Home to spectacular landmarks such as the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens, the park also has a lively events schedule, hosting major events such as the TRNSMT music festival, the annual Great Scottish Run and the World Pipe Band Championships. The Merchant City is one of Glasgow’s most stylish areas with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops housed in beautifully restored Victorian buildings. Fashion aficionados love the Italian Centre with its designer labels and European-style pavement cafes, while others flock to the courtyard of the Merchant Square for the nightlife, live sports, weekend craft fairs and special events.
