A distressing alarm from UNHCR: a surge in violence targeting women and girls in eastern DRC. Shockingly, the most recent data paints a grim picture, with over 10,000 individuals seeking help for gender-based violence (GBV) services in North Kivu during the first quarter of the year. Even more disturbing, a staggering 66 percent of these cases involve the horrifying crime of rape. This is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action, advocacy, and support to protect and empower the most vulnerable in this crisis-stricken region. Together, we must work towards a safer, more just future for all.
In this deeply moving video, we share the inspiring story of Samrawit, a survivor who bravely overcame unimaginable adversity. Samrawit was once a victim of human traffickers, enduring nearly two years of captivity in the heart of Libya. Her experience was marked by unspeakable violence and traumatic abuse. With the invaluable assistance of UNHCR, Samrawit was granted a lifeline to safety and was evacuated to Rwanda. Here, she embarks on a journey of healing, receiving vital psychosocial care to help her overcome the scars of her past. Join us as we follow Samrawit's incredible transformation, witnessing her resilience, strength, and the indomitable spirit that carried her through the darkest of times. This is a story of survival, of a survivor rising above the shadows of her past, and of the power of hope in the face of adversity.
