One of the most significant costs is the potential perpetuation of the cycle of violence.

When people remain silent, their experiences are often buried deep within, festering like an untreated wound, and manifesting in various way.

Furthermore, when people remain silent, their experiences are often buried deep within, festering like an untreated wound, and manifesting in various ways such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse issues. This not only affects the well-being of the individual but also strains relationships and hampers their ability to lead fulfilling lives. They may inadvertently bring the scars and neurological formatting of their trauma into new relationships, perpetuating harmful patterns and cycles amongst those they love. Unaddressed trauma can also become a roadblock to personal growth and a sense of genuine fulfilment. Those who do not confront their past may find it difficult to trust others, form healthy relationships, have a sense of purpose, and pursue their dreams and aspirations. So how do we break the silence and build a society where we can share our stories and begin to heal? The power of owning your story after experiencing GBV cannot be overstated. However, in South Africa, where GBV and particularly rape remains a pervasive problem, it is essential to create an environment where everyone, regardless of their gender, feels empowered to speak out and seek help. This starts with prioritising awareness and education, with having those critical conversations at a national level and encouraging individuals to step out and bravely share their stories. Societal stereotypes often discourage men from speaking out about their experiences of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and domestic violence thus perpetuating a culture of silence and shame. However, by creating a more inclusive dialogue at a national level, we can encourage all survivors, regardless of gender, to reclaim their narratives and begin their healing journeys.
