This article explores the crucial connection between GBV and positive psychology, emphasising the importance of psychological treatment as an integral part of the healing process.

How do we react after experiencing gender-based violence?

Socio-economic abuse : Socio-economic abuse can lead to survivors working fewer hours or being less productive at work due to the psychological toll it takes. Financial independence and self-sufficiency may be compromised. Emotional abuse: This abuse erodes self- confidence. Survivors may doubt their abilities, feel excessively dependent on their abuser, and develop an unhealthy reliance on external validation. GBV can manifest itself in different forms, each resulting in its own set of emotional and psychological challenges. Understanding theses common reactions is a crucial step towards addressing the healing process: S exual abuse: Survivors of sexual abuse may grapple with feelings of shame, guilt, and confusion. Some may withdraw from intimate relationships, while others might engage in promiscuous behaviour as a way of coping. Physical abuse: This often leads to heightened anger and constant negative thoughts. Survivors may struggle with controlling their emotions and find it difficult to trust others. Verbal abuse: Verbal abuse can severely affect self-esteem. Individuals subjected to constant criticism and demeaning comments may internalise these negative messages, leading to a diminished sense of self-worth.

Overcoming is in our DNA

Survivors of GBV are not merely victims; they are resilient individuals with the potential to recover and thrive. However, on the road to healing one can be met with obstacles, and it often requires professional psychological treatment. This process is essential because the trauma experienced in such situations can leave profound scars on the survivor’s psyche, impacting various aspects of their life.
