Welcome to

You’ve just received a packet of books chosen especially for you by your school. These books are yours to keep. Kick back, relax, and read them whenever you have a spare moment. It’s important to read as much as you can. Write about all the books you enjoyed in this journal.

Reading a lot really matters! Here are five reasons why:

1 Reading takes you great places! Reading gives your mind the ability to explore big ideas. Reading gives your IMAGINATION the ability to travel through time and visit real and magical worlds. 2 Reading makes your brain STRONG ! The best way to work out your brain and hold on to what you learned in school last year is to read, read, read! 3 Reading stretches your vocabulary! Reading books teaches you tons of new and AMAZING words—words that will help you do well on tests and in life, too. Make note of new and interesting words you discovered in your reading on the Star Words sheet on page 13. 4 Reading improves your writing! There is no better way to boost writing skills than to read AWESOME books by authors you admire. (And, of course, writing about awesome books in this journal helps, too.) 5 Reading makes you a better learner! Research shows that reading a lot of fiction and nonfiction builds important comprehension and problem-solving skills. PLUS reading provides tools that will help you SUCCEED in school, college, and the career of your choice.

Keep Track of Your Reading Use the handy Reading Log on the back of this journal to keep track of all the books you read. It’s the perfect place to list (and rate) the many fiction and nonfiction titles you enjoy. Or, if your school has purchased the Scholastic TrackIt program, log on to www.trackit.scholastic.com . This cool tool allows you to keep a digital record of every title you read.

Using this journal is easy and fun. Just follow these three super-simple tips:

1 After you finish a book, choose one of the writing activities to complete. We think you will find them thought-provoking and ENTERTAINING . (NOTE: Just be sure to check whether the activity is right for fiction, nonfiction, or either.) 2 Share your journal writing with a friend or family member. Why? Your writing will likely spark FASCINATING conversations on topics such as books, growing up, caring for the planet, heroes, history, animals, friendship, and so much more. 3 Take the completed journal into school and share it with your teachers. The writing inside will provide a helpful snapshot of who you are as a reader, writer, learner, and all-around INCREDIBLE person.

¡Leer mucho es realmente importante! Estas son cinco razones del porqué:

1 ¡Leer te lleva a maravillosos lugares! La lectura le da a tu mente el poder de explorar grandes ideas. Le da a tu IMAGINACIÓN un boleto virtual para visitar reinos, tanto reales como mágicos.

2 ¡Leer FORTALECE tu cerebro! La mejor manera de ejercitar tu cerebro y mantener lo que aprendiste en la escuela el año pasado es leer, leer, ¡leer!

3 ¡Leer amplía tu vocabulario! Cuando lees libros aprendes muchas palabras nuevas y SORPRENDENTES ; palabras que te ayudarán en los exámenes y también en la vida. Anota Las palabras nuevas e interesantes que descubras durante tus lecturas en Palabras estrella de la página 13. 4 ¡Leer mejora tu escritura! No hay mejor manera de impulsar tus destrezas de escritura que leer libros ASOMBROSOS por los autores que tú admiras; y claro, ayuda también escribir sobre libros asombrosos en este diario. 5 ¡Leer te hace un mejor estudiante! Las investigaciones muestran que la lectura de muchos libros de ficción y no ficción desarrolla destrezas importantes de comprensión y de resolución de problemas. ADEMÁS, la lectura proporciona herramientas que te ayudarán a tener ÉXITO en la escuela, la universidad y en la carrera que escojas.
