LOVE LIFE IS The Art of the Storyteller PAUL HORTON

LOVE LIFE IS The Art of the Storyteller PAUL HORTON Paul Horton has been exhibiting his work for over 35 years and has developed a style of art and subject matter that has become instantly recognisable and universally popular. Often described as a modern day Lowry, his work has moved on in so many avenues and directions that, in truth, he can best be described as a unique storyteller. Paul’s work is at once striking and beautiful with an immediacy and innocence; but look closer and there is symbolism, depth and even iconography in his colourful pastel work. The world he has created connects with the everyman, bringing with it so many elements that we can all relate to. He continues to surprise us with new and exciting storylines and yet still manages to retain the original elements of his work that we have come to love. With Paul’s work continuing to rise in popularity we are delighted to present to you his new exhibition ‘Love is Life’.

In order to grow and develop as an artist it is vital to challenge yourself to seek new ideas and inspirations and my newly created harbour scenes have given a new direction and spirit to my work.To me ‘Love Is Life’ has become the embodiment of this exhibition. I have tried to capture a timeless world that represents love and the family; bringing with it happy memories of family holidays and a sense that we all need to love and be loved. Love Is Life

I feel very proud to have created a world that never existed before; a world that people can relate to and believe in. It has become a form of escapism with many paintings being imbued with a feeling of love and hope. Love is such a powerful emotion and the bond of love between the couple should never be broken and will live forever more. Far Beyond Forever

I love to see my work represented in three-dimensional form; giving me the opportunity to bring aspects of my paintings to life in a totally different way.The shape of the house lends itself, almost like building blocks, to a sculptural format. Years of being beside the sea has left the small row of houses weather worn and unique in character; adding yet another element to my newly created harbour scenes. Beside The Sea

Spellbound

I love the idea of becoming a storyteller through my paintings. The wizard character, above all others, affords me the opportunity to enter into another world; to journey to a time of magic and mystery - a world where anything is possible! In one of my previous pieces ‘If You Believe’ we see the wizard as merely a silhouette in his secret hideaway. This new piece takes you directly into the wizards house and connects both paintings through the narrative; a narrative which can develop as part of your own imagination.

Fragile Earth A couple of years ago I created the original ‘ark’ painting entitled ‘Disappearing World’.This signified a major change of direction and a journey into the unknown for me. I have been absolutely delighted with the response to my ‘ark’ pictures - and I have always had in the back of my mind a third interpretation of the classical biblical theme of Noah’s Ark. In this piece I have returned to the original concept but combined it with the theme of climate change; considering the important issues that effect this beautiful planet we all share. This new image highlights the concern for the polar ice caps and the environmental changes taking place today. The ark is placed as a symbol, a saviour perhaps, of all creatures found within the remote wilderness of both the Arctic and Antarctic regions of this fragile earth. Each edition of ‘Fragile Earth’ will be personally remarqued with an original polar bear drawing by Paul Horton.

The Man Who No-One Knows It has become increasingly evident that the narrative element is an integral part of my work. I am proud of the history that has developed from the original creation of each and every one of my characters. The ‘Man of Mystery’ featured in my first ever street scene and ‘The ManWho No-One Knows’ sees him taking his place for the first time amongst other characters of his own time.“Who is the Man of Mystery?” It’s quite simple, he is whoever you want him to be...

Life & Times Many of my industrial street scenes seem to pay homage to L.S. Lowry and the times he lived through, but the rows of tenement streets and numerous factories also reflect my own background from the industrial heartlands of Britain and bring back so many memories from my own childhood and family life. These everyday scenes have formed a cornerstone of my work and since his first appearance ‘The Working Man’ has become an iconic figure within my paintings.

The Road To Glory I have a long standing passion for the ‘beautiful game’ and ever since ‘The Magic of the Cup’ I have wanted to return to this theme. Football has always played such an important part in people’s lives. Life long loyalty and devotion to your team see’s children of every generation aspiring to become their footballing heroes - playing football in the street or at the local park, imagining they are scoring the winning goal in the cup final!

When The Circus Comes To Town

I have always seen the little tramp as a figure of optimism and like so many of the various characters within my work he mirrors and reflects our own journey of life. I enjoy introducing new elements that may or may not alter a persons destiny. The warm sky in this piece offers happiness and the path brings a change of direction; perhaps it offers hope of a new life which could be just around the corner.

Your Heart & Mine Some time ago I decided to move a single house from the middle of a terraced street and place it on its own upon a hill. This was to signify that each and every home is important; a place for love and the family, and it has now become a trademark within my work and just as important as the characters themselves. The small red flower by the door is a symbol of love and appears in a number of my paintings.
