UK businesses are pushing ahead with their net zero goals despite postponement of targets by the UK government, according to new research. Of companies surveyed with a workforce over 50, 96% said they would keep to their original targets, with 58% aiming for significant cutbacks within the next five years and 77% by 2030. The study, conducted by Vattenfall Network Solutions, surveyed 1,000 mid-sized industrial firms after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak relaxed a number of key net zero policies. Jim Watson, Director of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, said the UK’s weakening of targets “risks increasing the costs by delaying the shift away from fossil fuels and reducing the economic benefits to the UK”. While 69% of companies with carbon reduction or net zero targets included electrification, solar PV or changes in energy use as part of their plans, 80% of respondents acknowledged guidance as necessary to meet their targets. www.group.vattenfall.com/uk UK businesses push on with net zero targets

Construction underway for first Ireland/ continental Europe interconnector

Work has commenced on the Celtic Interconnector project connecting east Cork in Ireland to the north- west coast of Brittany, France. The first interconnector between Ireland and continental Europe, the project will offer capacity to import and export enough electricity to power 450,000 homes. Construction is underway at Knockraha in east Cork, with subcontractor Sorensen Civil Engineering carrying out groundwork on behalf of cable manufacturer Nexans for EirGrid. Nexans will design and install the 575km cable between the two countries, while Siemens Energy will deliver a converter station

at Ballyadam, as well as high-voltage transmission technology required at the network connection point at Knockraha. Developed by EirGrid and its French counterpart, Réseau de Transport d’Electricité, the Celtic Interconnector is a 700MW high-voltage subsea power cable linking the electricity grids of Ireland and France. Michael Mahon, EirGrid Chief Infrastructure Officer, said, “This transformative project is set to act as a catalyst in assuring Ireland’s energy security, along with delivering many other benefits, including applying downward pressure on the cost of electricity to consumers in Ireland and France.” www.eirgrid.ie

Adopting clean energy technologies in new and retrofitted buildings could create 2m new jobs in the US and Europe, including 247,000 in the UK, according to new research. Published in an open-access paper, Building a Green Future, the research represents a research collaboration between Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability and the Schneider ElectricTM Sustainability Research Institute (SRI). The study estimates global employment outcomes for low-carbon building archetypes spanning residential, hospital, hotel, office, retail and education. It focuses specifically on the potential around deploying rooftop solar panels, heat pumps and energy storage batteries for self- produced or prosumer renewable energy over time in alignment with global net-zero goals targeting 2050. Vincent Petit, Senior Vice President of Climate and Energy Transition Research at Schneider Electric and Head of the SRI, said, “It is now feasible to rapidly transition buildings to net zero. What we often do not realize is that such a transition comes with significant socioeconomic benefits. This research is another demonstration of this fact.” www.se.com/ie/en/ Transition to net-zero buildings could create 2m jobs in US and Europe

New tariffs on batteries could push up the price of EVs exported between the EU and UK.

Call for delay to avoid £3,400 tax hike on electric vehicles

The auto sector has called for postponement of new Rules of Origin for EV batteries manufactured in both the EU and UK until 2027. Due to come into force in January 2024, the new regulations could add an average of £3,400 to EU-made and £3,600 to British battery-powered EVs, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). SMMT has said failure to delay introduction of the regulations could pose a risk to EV sector competitiveness, the EV transition and

wider net zero ambitions. Together with the EU auto sector, it is urging the EU and UK to strike an agreement to avoid the Brexit tariffs, which could render EU and UK electrified vehicles uncompetitive in each other’s markets. A three-year delay would provide the necessary time for EU and UK gigafactories to come on stream as well as helping the development of local battery parts and critical mineral supply chains, said SMMT. Cathal Maguire, ATC Automation Sales Director, said, “We are looking forward to promoting the Spelsberg range of innovative electrical installation and enclosure products to both our existing and new customers in the Irish market. This new product line from Spelsberg will complement our existing brand portfolio and provide customers with access to over 5,000 products for electrical installation, panel building, and concrete installation applications.” ATC has scheduled a training day for its sales engineers. www.atcautomation.ie

Investor confidence is being shaken by the politicisation of net zero targets in the UK, according to trade body, the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA). ECA member firms are investing heavily in EV infrastructure, battery storage, solar PV and low energy heating, and need government to adopt a consistent approach and work together with industry to develop the policies, technologies and skills needed to reach net zero. Paul Reeve, ECA Director of CSR, said, “Rishi Sunak’s overall direction of travel towards achieving net zero has not changed. But a delay in the timescale will undoubtably shake the confidence and plans of many large and small businesses alike, not to mention consumers.” The delays could, however, create opportunities to move to a ‘technology agnostic’ approach rather than focusing on one or two low carbon fixes, adopt fairer pricing for low carbon technology, ramp up EV charging infrastructure and invest in training and skills. www.eca.co.uk ECA hits out at politicisation of net zero targets

Flame protection from the inside out I n many working environments, our end customers are exposed to risks involving heat and flames daily. If an accident happens, the consequences can be extremely serious. Protective clothing can never fully eliminate the risks or offer 100% protection, but the choice of clothing can mean the difference between a mild and a serious injury. It is therefore vital that a workplace risk analysis has been carried out, so that the choice of personal protective equipment (PPE) is based on the right parameters.

Even clothing that appears to have nothing to do with flame protection can be hugely important in minimising the consequences if an accident should happen. One example is underwear or

Electrical wholesale supplier sees steady growth A NEW ECOMMERCE SITE HAS MADE ORDERING EASIER, AS WELL AS ACCESS TO OFFERS AND TECHNICAL DATA, ACROSS CORE DISTRIBUTION’S RANGE OF CABLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS…

O rdering cable management systems from Core Distribution has just got a whole lot easier thanks to the firm’s investment in a new ecommerce site. Already live in the Republic of Ireland, the new site will be operational in Northern Ireland in 2024, offering online ordering, offers and technical data across Core’s €2m of stock in its Dublin and Belfast warehouses.

The new site enhances features for Core’s electrical wholesale customers including quick, easy ordering, access to account history and product updates and offers such as buy-10, get-one-free, price break items and Coupon Code discounts. Non-account holders will be able to access product ranges, technical specifications and video demonstrations. For design and operation of its new

ecommerce site, Core Distribution partnered with Expertlogix and its Aphix software suite. Expertlogix has built e-commerce platforms for electrical distributors, manufacturers and wholesalers across the UK and Ireland. Two years in the making, the project required changes to Core’s enterprise resource planning system to accommodate the ecommerce platform across the group of companies. The new software then had to be up and running for six months before a soft launch of ecommerce operations back in July. Dan Fisher, Managing Director of Core Distribution, said, “We wanted to make sure that we didn’t have issues and problems that could cause delays for our customers, so we selected customers to promote it to in a phased basis. “This worked well, and we have seen steady growth since that date. Over the next two years, we aim to have the majority of our standard orders come through the site, with project pricing and larger bulk ordering still dealt with in the current manner.” About 70% of the range is currently on the system, with more products added daily.

MANUFACTURER - MERSEN

A GLOBAL EXPERT IN ELECTRICAL POWER AND ADVANCED MATERIALS FOR HIGH- TECH INDUSTRIES, MERSEN PLANS TO ROLL OUT ITS TEST LAB SERVICES TO MORE EXTERNAL CUSTOMERS… Forty years of safety tests across electrical systems

M ore than 90% of capacity at electrical engineering specialist Mersen’s test centre in Saint- Bonnet-de-Mure, near Lyon in France, is currently for in-house orders. But the global expert in electrical power and advanced materials plans to expand its offer to external customers. Established 40 years ago, the extensive test and research facilities span 1,600 square metres across four levels. Ludovic Derouen, High Power Tests Manager, said: “The lab is divided into two areas – a High Power Test Lab for current short circuit, EV, high di/dt bench and a second part including low voltage, environmental and mechanical labs.” Highly qualified experts conduct around 10,000 electric, dielectric, mechanical and environmental tests annually across 50 test benches, primarily on fuses and fuse gears including units protecting semiconductors, cables or motors. “We also test overall Mersen product lines such as laminated bus bars, surge protection devices, capacitors and some of the components manufactured by Mersen for trains,” said Ludovic. “For external customers, we also assist them in their test developments. For example, in the aerospace industry, Mersen also tests cables and power lines for potential use in electric aircraft drives and many other industries. “In the area of electric vehicles, we test pyrotechnic fuses, which are a kind

of hybrid fuse and current system component that insulate the battery of an electric car from the rest of the vehicle.” The High Power Test Lab tests the short-circuit properties, transient current withstand, switching on and off under voltage and in case of short circuits, as well as operation under fast current rise conditions with both alternating and direct current. Testing of short-circuit properties involves use of the centre’s extensive optical equipment, with high-speed cameras that can record up to 40,000 images per second. The Saint Bonnet Test Lab is equipped

with a total of five power platforms, which can generate a wide range of currents and voltages both in direct and alternating current. The Lab owns two capacitor benches, one specifically dedicated to electrical vehicle applications with very low inductance in hard climatic conditions (-40°C to 150°C) and a second dedicated to high-speed semiconductor protections up to 4 kV and 320 kA. In addition to current low voltage tests, based on AC/DC power supplies and cycling equipment, the Environmental and Low Voltage Test Lab is equipped with seven environmental climatic chambers for testing of components under extreme environmental conditions associated with cycling power supplies. Salt spray tests examine, for example, the behaviour of fuses in air with a high salt content such as in coastal areas. Lab Director Franck Sarrus is also responsible for Research & Development at Mersen in Europe, and internal customers are treated with the same independence and impartiality as external customers. https://ep.mersen.com/
