Warning issued as tool thefts peak after clocks change Tradespeople have been urged to review their tool security with police data indicating tool thefts peak in November after the clocks change and remain high throughout the darker winter months. The analysis of tool thefts in 2021 and 2022 has been compiled by Direct Line business insurance from data supplied by the police forces of Northern Ireland, England and Wales, and a survey of 2,000 UK adults conducted in March 2023. It found all tool theft is 34% higher, rising to 44% for thefts from vehicles, in November than April. The average value of tools taken from vehicles was £3,425, according to Direct Line, rising £6m from spring-summer to an estimated £37m loss in autumn-winter 2021/2022. Alison Traboulsi, Product Manager at Direct Line, said: “With police force data showing that thieves exploit the darker days to steal tools, now is a good time to reflect on where and how tradespeople store their tools and make any necessary changes from installing additional locks and alarms to being aware of where to park.” www.directlineforbusiness.co.uk
