JULY 2023
A Short Guide on Purposeful Parenting HOW PRISCILLA AND I ARE PUTTING IN THE EFFORT!
If there’s one thing I know for sure about parenthood, it’s that every parent has their own style that works for them. It’s certainly taken some time for
Books like Elizabeth Verdick’s “Teeth Are Not For Biting” and “Waiting Is Not Forever” have been extremely helpful for her! Priscilla has even built a “frustration corner” for Isabella when she feels upset. When she’s struggling to convey her emotions or thoughts, she heads to the frustration corner, which has pictures of different emotions she can try and identify as her own. There’s even a small yoga stretching guide that shows a specific emotion and a matching yoga pose to help her calm down. At her age, tantrums are aplenty, and this corner helps her relax and better understand her feelings. Fortunately for us, Rebecca is still toothless and, therefore, unable to bite anyone just yet. The worst thing she can do at her age is spit up her formula!
Priscilla and me to find our footing as parents, and we’re still learning! July is Purposeful Parenting Month and the time for us to reflect on how we’re guiding our children and how we can improve. If you’ve never heard of “purposeful parenting,” it’s the practice of being active and present for your children while ensuring rules are positively enforced. In all honesty, Priscilla is the one who has taken the lead in purposeful parenting, or as we like to call it, respectful parenting. She’s put the extra effort into learning how to positively impact our kids and let them feel loved while keeping boundaries in place. So, how do we do this miracle? No yelling! The key is to take their bad behavior as a learning opportunity rather than going straight to punishment mode. Stay calm and help them understand their feelings or why they decided to behave this way. Show them the appropriate behavior and ensure they know their previous actions aren’t allowed. You can be stern and loving, all without yelling or screaming.
When it comes to purposeful parenting, there are more ways you can help be a positive guide for your child. While no yelling is a significant aspect, we also ensure we don’t baby her. When she has a tantrum, we might talk to her almost like an adult. When we speak to her this way, she gets our attention without any positive reinforcement. Another tip that has certainly worked for our family is adhering to a daily schedule! Priscilla has created a routine where our kids know exactly when it's time to nap, bathe, sleep, etc. When you have a steady pattern in place, your toddlers will be much more predictable! While I still have a lifetime of learning about parenthood, these are just a few practices that have benefited my family. Our girls will grow older, and suddenly, we’ll need to be learning and adapting all over again! This Purposeful Parenting Month, I hope you can give some extra support to your kids, no matter their age.
We’ve recently been practicing this since Isabella and her classmates first started having trouble with biting. That’s right, biting. Kids bite to show their frustration since they don’t know how else to do so. Unfortunately, this has been a problem at her school, and one child was even expelled for his biting habits. That’s when we realized we needed to take this issue seriously and ensure Isabella didn’t continue. Since she’s only 2 years old, she can’t easily articulate her feelings. As a result, we try our best to understand why she may be upset and teach her how to express herself better. We even read bedtime stories that will help her comprehend her emotions.

WHAT YOUR SUMMER GARAGE SALE CAN TEACH YOUR KIDS
A summer garage sale is a tried and tested way to earn a little cash while eliminating things you no longer need. But it’s also the perfect opportunity for parents to teach their children a few life lessons. Making your garage sale a family project can teach kids about organization, money management, and the pride of a hard day’s work. The lessons start immediately as your family determines what they no longer need. Younger children, in particular, often struggle to part with their possessions. A garage sale is an opportunity to discuss what they use, what they don’t, and why we can’t keep every object we own forever. This process will teach kids organization as they create their “keep,” “sell,” and “toss” piles. On the big day, your children can also play a significant role in organizing and displaying your merchandise. Kids can help determine which items should share a table and what should be front and center to catch buyers’ eyes.
Math and money management also play a pivotal role in any successful garage sale. First, you must determine what the items you’re selling are worth. While letting your kids set prices is probably unwise, you can help them understand market value and what people will pay for used merchandise. Your children can take a more active role in the sale itself. Depending on their ages, they can gain valuable experience making change for customers or negotiating a deal on the items for sale. The best part of using your garage sale as a learning opportunity is that your children can personally experience the value of hard work. They’ll watch their old possessions disappear and the cash trickle in. More than anything, they’ll probably love adding up the day’s takings.
Whether or not you give your kids a cut of the earnings is up to you. But even if they don’t end up with fatter pockets, your children will walk away from the family garage sale with lessons that will last longer than any extra cash could.
3 MOST COMMON REASONS FOR A
their previous injuries to falsely earn workers’ compensation. One way to avoid this is by being upfront about your medical history and how this accident worsened this injury, not started it. 2. The employee missed the deadline. Another common reason for a denied case is that the employee missed the deadline. It can take time to assemble your case and file a claim. Before you know it, the deadline has passed, and your lawsuit is rejected. Insurance companies enforce strict deadlines to ensure no one tries to fake injury years down the line. Yet, this could be frustrating for those who simply filed their paperwork late. If you experience an accident at work, tell your employer immediately! An attorney can help you file your paperwork correctly and on time. 3. The injury wasn’t ‘work-related.’ An insurance company or your employer can try to prove your injury or the accident was not work-related or didn’t take place at work. This can happen if there were no witnesses or footage of the accident, the injury occurred during a break time, or your own negligence in the workplace caused the damage. While this decision can be harder to reverse, a knowledgeable attorney can still do so. Have you or someone you know experienced a rejected workers’ compensation claim? If so, our team can fight to reverse the decision and help you receive the compensation you deserve. Call us at (229) 888-0888 to learn more about how we can help.
DENIED CASE SAVE TIME AND BE HONEST UPFRONT
When insurers deny your case, it can feel like the end of the world. It takes time and effort to file for workers’ compensation, and with all the pain you’ve experienced, being rejected can seem like a dead end. While it can be tricky, an attorney can help fight for an appeal. There’s still hope you can receive compensation for your workplace injury. First, you need to discover why insurers rejected your case in the first place before creating a counterargument. 1. Injuries were from a preexisting condition. If an insurance company sees that you had a preexisting condition before the accident, they will most likely try to use this as an excuse for your pain. These companies will dive into your medical records to check if you ever received treatment or had an operation on a specific body part or injury. This way, they can reject those using

WHAT TV LEGAL SHOWS DON’T DISCLOSE
When it comes to legal myths, the list can go on for miles. Yet, one fallacy that stands out to most people is when they witness how long a legal process actually takes. Our favorite “Law and Order” episode
near as theatrical as your favorite courtroom drama. When people continuously watch mega-fast Hollywood-crafted trials, they’re fairly stunned by the anticlimactic reality.
may only last about 40 minutes, but a lawsuit can take months. A murder case? Well, that can even take years before the case is officially closed. In an episode of these popular television shows, the murder case, trial, and conviction can all take place in under an hour. Because of this, audiences start to falsely believe legal matters are resolved much faster than they are. Once they come to our office for legal help, many people need clarification about why it's taking so long!
Anything in the legal system can take time, even years. Shows and movies cut down the not-so-exciting parts of cases, and many clients are let down by how slow this process actually is. While you can get lucky with simple and short cases, be aware that you may be in for the long run. The legal process can’t be rushed, unfortunately. Paperwork, back-and-forth communication, and typical delays can make any case last longer than you think.

How a Byzantine Princess Introduced Forks to Europe PAGE 4
IN FORKS WE TRUST
HOW EUROPE EVENTUALLY STOPPED EATING WITH THEIR HANDS
If you attend a dinner party, go on a date at a restaurant, or eat a plate of pasta, you’ll use a fork without thinking twice. This is proper etiquette — and the cleanest and most efficient way to eat a meal! Could you imagine trying to eat a plate of spaghetti and meatballs without one? Wealthy people in other parts of the world, such as the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East, have been using forks since the 17th century. However, before that, forks were considered to be sacrilegious and rude to use at the dinner table in Europe! In fact, in the 11th century, a Byzantine princess was ridiculed for bringing forks into her new husband's home. Maria Argyropoulina, the Greek niece of Emperor Basil II of Byzantium, arrived in Venice, Italy, prepared to marry Giovanni, the son of Pietro Orseolo II, the Doge of Venice. She brought all of her belongings with
her to move into her new house, including a case of golden forks. At the wedding, she pulled out one of her golden forks to partake in her wedding feast, and the reaction she got took her by surprise. The clergy lambasted her, saying things like, “God in his wisdom has provided man with natural forks — his fingers. Therefore, it is an insult to him to substitute artificial metal forks for them when eating." However, this didn’t urge the princess to eat with her hands, and she stuck with her forks. Shortly after the marriage, the Byzantine princess, unfortunately, contracted the plague and passed away. Many believed this was “karma” for refusing to eat with her hands and bringing a fork to her husband’s home. But thanks to Maria Argyropoulina, Europe was introduced to the fork and never had to worry about eating spaghetti and meatballs — or any other dish — with their hands again.
