Power from on High B y J ohn G reenfield
The author is an evangelist of the Mora vian church. He writes o f the two-hun dredth anniversary o f the great Moravian Revival. Much o f the book is historical.. It chronicles the marvelous manifestations of spiritual power that developed at Herrnhut in connection with the work of Zinzendorf and his associates. The relation o f this movement to the revivals under Whitefield and Wesley is shown. Each outpouring of blessing was preceded by much prayer. 94 pages. John Greenfield, Warsaw, Ind. Pa per. Price 25 cents. The Challengers B y G race L ivingston H ill The Challengers are a fascinating fam ily who have fallen on hard times. In pros perity, they have forgotten God, while re maining highly respectable people—a col lege professor’s family. Driven by illness, accident, and poverty to cry to God, they learn how He cares for His own, and come out o f their eclipse into a fairyland o f good fortune and renewed faith. The story is full of tense action, the romance is in right proportion, and the ethics are o f the kind that leave a sweet taste in one’s mouth. 318 pages. Lippincott Co. Cloth. Price $ 2 . 00 . Gillian’s Treasure B y B eth J. C oombe H arris Sixteen-year-old Gillian Ballard, more quiet and serious than her laughing twin sister, had learned to trust her Lord as she studied at the feet o f old Dame Rat cliffe. When Queen Mary came to the throne o f England and all her subjects were forced, upon penalty o f death, to fol low in Her Majesty’s Roman Catholic worship, the events o f the next five years were a sore test to Gillian’s faith, but He who had saved her was able to keep her from falling. This tale o f heroism and ro mance is artfully woven around the true story o f the life and martyrdom of Rich ard Woodman. It is an excellent book to put into the hands o f high school young people; for its message o f salvation is clear, and its example o f faithfulness is challenging. 244 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.00. Samuel Crowther of the Niger B y J esse P age In the year 1821, in the Yoruba country on the banks o f the Niger in West Africa, twelve-year-old Adjai was frightened in his hut by the attack of a slave hunting Mohammedan tribe. His father fell in the fray, and he and his mother and sister ran, only to be captured and driven away in the slave-lines. The thrilling story o f how little Adjai came to find his Saviour, was educated, and later became the man that we know as Samuel Crowther, Bishop o f the Niger, the first native bishop in Africa, is told by Mr. Page in simple style that is fascinating to teen-age young people, as well as to those who are older. The author was per sonally acquainted with Samuel Crowther, who read with him the' proof sheets o f this volume. One sentence from the pre face well describes both the bishop and the book, “ One o f his characteristics was a strong disapprobation o f ‘the praise of man,’ and he recognized with evident plea sure that these pages aimed rather to glo rify God than to magnify man.” 190 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.00.

Pass on the Torch B y A llen E astman C ross A sheaf o f poems by a maker of hymns. Real poetry is rare, and we believe this book to be made up o f real poetry. Pilgrim Press. Cloth. Price $ 1 . 00 . Word Pictures in the New Testament B y A rchibald T homas R obertson Dr. Robertson has added another mas sive book to the long list o f his writings. He gives a scholarly introduction to John’s Gospel and then takes up the text word by word, bringing out the significance o f the original, showing how heresies are set aside by the inexorable laws of language, and giving to the English reader something of the idiom o f the Greek. The form and derivation o f difficult words are stated. The book o f Hebrews is similarly treated. The volume will be of great value to any Greek student, particularly to those who have not kept up their Greek. 451 pages. Long & Smith Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $3.50. Dr. Riley, who is pastor o f the First Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minn., pre sents ten questions, each o f them crack ling with present-day interest. One of them is “Humanism—Is It Also and Only Heathenism?” Another, “ Shall Affinities and Free Love Displace the Family?” An other, “Are W orld Governments Doomed? What Redemption?” Dr. Riley handles these questions with fairness, •fearless ness, and force. All o f the questions really center upon what the Bible is, and this is the first question o f the ten, namely, “ Is the Bible a Human or a Divine Book?” 200 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. Whoso takes hut a step to God Through doubtings dim, God will advance a mile Through dazzling light to him. — S elected . Ten Burning Questions B y W . B. R iley
With Henry Clay Trumbull (father of the present editor of The Sunday School Times), soul-winning was both a passion and a vocation. Soon after his conversion at the age o f twenty-one, he resolved that whenever he was in such intimacy with a soul as to be justified in choosing the sub ject of conversation, the theme of themes should have prominence between them, so that he might learn that person’s need and, if possible, meet it. During the more than half a century which followed, he lived in habitual faithfulness to that reso lution. The book is not merely a collection o f striking incidents which grew out o f the writer’s faithfulness to his resolve; it goes farther, and offers illustration o f the vast- riess o f the work which God is ready to perform through any one who will make it his business, day in and day out, to. earn estly, tenderly, compassionately address an audience o f one on the subject o f his eter nal welfare. It casts a new glow and glory about the oft-neglected task o f personal witnessing. It warms the heart with its irresistible appeal. It is a book you will read and reread and pass on to others. 186 pages. American Tract Society. Cloth. Price $1.00. The Gospel of St. John B y P aul H arrison The author has been a missionary in Arabia for twenty years. He is therefore prepared to interpret the peculiarly East ern point o f view as few Westerners can. He does not attempt to produce a complete commentary on John, but leads the reader to fresh appreciation o f the deep purpose o f the writing of this Gospel, which is to produce faith in Christ and consequent sal vation. 166 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $1,25. Is Evolution True? B y W . B ell D awson Dr. Dawson has written two valuable booklets, the subtitles o f which are: “ What the Stars, Plants, and Atoms Tell U s” and “ How the Creator Has Planned ifor His Creatures.” In the first named ‘pamphlet, the element o f change as it ap plies to the stars is shown to be always a stepping down rather than a stepping up to higher forms. Plants and trees, on the other hand, have the power to change the inorganic into organic forms. Animals feed upon plant life or upon other animal -life. The microscopic plants and animals have means o f nutrition as wonderful as may be found in the higher and larger or ders. All are shown to evidence most clear ly the presence of design in their creation. In the second pamphlet, in language that is comprehensive and yet simple enough for children to understand, the author sets forth the properties o f light, the clouds, the proportions o f water to land, the func tions o f plant life, the dependence o f ani mals upon plants, and the needs o f the higher animals and o f man himself. The evidence o f intelligent design is over
