Where Is Four Slrraaurr?

Quartet Number— “Give of Your Best to the Master.” Leader’s Talk. Personal Testimonies—Real, vital, com pelling, straight from the heart, renewing vows o f allegiance to God. Quiet Hour. Hymn—“ Following Jesus.” Benediction—Hebrews 13:20, 21. Meditation on the Lesson In this sublime passage, we have an un compromising challenge for the highest form of Christian living. One sublime goal shines forth with the brilliance of a beacon light-—“the glory o f God.” W e imme diately recall the answer to the first ques tion o f the old Westminster Shorter Cate chism: “What is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God and en joy Him forever.” “ For whether we live, we live unto the L ord ; and whether we die, we die unto the L o rd : whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s” (Rom. 14:8). “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” If we live by this high standard, we shall then be very apt to consider the ultimate good o f our brother, our neighbor-gifEven as I please all men in all things, not seek ing mine own profit, but that they may be saved.” What a motto for every Christian Endeavor to have! What a nation we would have if every citizen were seeking “not their own profit but the profit o f many” ! Here we see the vital connection between these verses and the subject “How Can I Help Prohibition?” If our aim is the glory o f God and the profit, or good, for the many, we shall do our utmost as individuals and as groups to help enforce the Eighteenth Amendment. Illustrations 2 I. K eeping O ne ’ s H ead “ That’s capital ale,” said a drinker; see how long it keeps its head. “ True,” was the reply, “ but see how soon it takes away yours.” II. Too L ate A working man, having spent all his money at the saloon, asked the landlady to let him have a quart o f beer on trust. She coarsely replied, “ I’ll knock your brains out if you ask me again to let you have beer on trust.” He replied, “ Oh, you’re too late; if I had any brains, I shouldn’t be here.” Discussion Material I. P ractical S uggestions A study o f the Daily Readings will be helpful in suggesting specific ways to help. 1. Support the law (Rom . 13:1-5). 2. Be personally dry (Rom. 14:21). 3. Urge temperance (Eph. 5:18-20). 4. Avoid bad company ( l Cor. 15:33). 5. Show the evil effects of alcohol (Prov. 23:29-35). II. O thers Lord, help me live from day to day In such a self-forgetful way That, even when I kneel to pray, My prayer shall be for others.

prayer. On the second day, one saloon keeper capitulated and gave his entire stock into the women’s hands to do with as they liked. At the end of eight days, every one of the eleven saloons in the village was closed. The brewers o f Cincinnati offered $5,000 reward to any one who would break the movement, and one unusually courag- ous male engaged to do. so. Within four days, he also threw up his hands and sur rendered to the praying women. This so-called “ Crusade” led to the formation of the Woman’s Christian Tem perance Union in 1874, and the influence of that organization, from that day to this, has been tremendous. —D ouglas , in Prohibition and Common Sense. Discussion Material I. H igh L icense An estimate o f the results o f high li cense in Chicago was given by the Chicago Daily News, April 9, 1888, in the follow ing editorial: “W e have had high license in Illinois for five years, and while it is a success as a revenue measure, it is an undisguised fail ure as a temperance measure. It in no way checks the consumption o f intoxicating liquor as a beverage, nor does it in the least degree lessen the evils or crimes from such use. . . . The dives and dens, the barrel-houses and thieves’ resorts, are as bad and as frequent in this city today, after five years of high license, as they ever were. Call high license what it is, an easy way to raise a revenue from vice, but let there be an end o f endorsing it as a temperance or reform measure.” — C alvin . II. S entence S ermons No guise is too good for sin to appro priate. W e shake our fist at a growing thunder cloud, but it will not disappear. —J ohnson . I f thou wouldst conquer thy weakness, thou must never gratify it. —W illiam P enn . Strong drink dulls and deadens the higher faculties o f the soul.—C larkson . No greater evil can come upon a land than the poisoning of the fountains of justice.—R. T uck . Drink is Death’s Prime Minister. —A ddison . People dread cholera but brandy is a far worse plague.— B alzac . III. B ible V erses on T emperance Be “not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre” (Tit. 1 :7). “ It is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink; Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judg ment o f any of the afflicted” (Prov. 31: 4 ,5 ). OCTOBER 30, 1932 W H A T SHALL OUR GROUP DO ABOUT PROHIBITION? 1 C orinthians 10:31-33; L uke 12 :6, 7 Suggestions for the Meeting Hymn— “The Fight is On.” - Hymn—“A Call for Loyal Soldiers.” Prayer—Leader of quiet hour.
