immortality and an assurance which is the pledge o f its own fulfillment. —A lexander M aclaren . SEPTEMBER 29 T he D awning of the D ay "The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works o f darkness" (Rom . 13:12). W e are not o f the world, though we are in the world. So “ we are not of the night,” though we are in the night. W e are “chil dren o f the day” ; we belong to the day, and the day belongs to us, as our true heri tage, though it has not yet dawned. Hope rests there; and though deferred, will not always tarry, nor when it comes will it shame our trust. “When the desire com- eth, it shall be a tree o f life.” —H oratius B onar . In the morning, in the noontide, and at even may I hear, Blessed Lord, Thy precious promise, and believe that Thou art near! “I come quickly.” Thou has said it. “In a moment” it shall be. “ In the twinkling o f an eye,” Lord, we shall Thy fair Presence see! “ Even so.” Teach me to say it ; yea, to live it, day by day; May I walk with heart expectant thus to meet Thee on the w ay!” %?— R- W right H ay . SEPTEMBER 30 T he S pirit ’ s P rayers “ The Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be ut tered" (Rom . 8:26). There are times in this human life in which we have no language but a cry; a wail that can find no words; a groaning that cannot be uttered. There is no speech and no language ; the voice o f supplication is not heard ; only from the inmost recesses of the soul there rise up unspoken cries which are eloquent in their very speech lessness. They ask for nothing ; they know not what they ought to pray for. But Paul says that to ëvery one o f these cries there is imputed the value o f a prayer. Each of them is counted an intercession of the Spirit. The Father translates the lispings o f His child into His own language; He imputes to me what I would say if I could speak. . . . He interprets the groans o f the heart, not by its feeble capacity for ex pression, but by the largeness of His own love.— G eorge M atheson . OCTOBER 1 S trength for the C hristian "Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power” (Col. 1:11). O my soul, what encouraging words are these 1 How full o f meaning! The Lord our righteousness is the Lord our strength. He is near at hand, believer, to strengthen thee according to thy need . . . The Lord, who can do what He pleaseth, is in alliance, yea, in covenant with a believer; and therefore he shall be made more than a conqueror, through Christ who has loved him. Let me but hear my Saviour say, “ Strength shall be equal to thy day” ; Then I rejoice in deep distress, Leaning on all-sufficient grace. I glory in infirmity, That Christ’s own power may rest on m e; When I am weak, then am I strong; Grace is my shield, and Christ my song. —S elected .

reverence with her lov e; and we who were ragged and filthy souls, whom the Lord Jesus stoops to save and sanctify and unite with Himself as His body and His bride, must never forget that He is our Lord, and will forever be. There are types o f emotional and senti mental religion that have a great deal more to say about love than obedience. The test o f the reality o f Christian love is first obedience, then lowliness. All that which indulges in emotion and forgets obedience and practical service is rotten and spur ious ; it is not o f the Holy Spirit but o f the flesh.— S cripture T ruth . God, your God, your Heavenly Father, “careth for you” when business is bad, when health is low, when friends are sick, when children leave you. How much more, think you, with what an inexpressible ten derness o f caring will He care for His child when the burden that weighs you down is a burden o f guilt—when the loss you dread is the loss o f your soul—when the treasure you miss and cry after is that favor o f God which is better than life? . . . God is about thee in His caring love. He bends closer to thee in thy soul- trouble than to any other spot on earth. Yield thee to His regenerating love in Christ, and He will wash thee whiter than lilies, clothe thee with a robe o f righteous ness, crown thee with a diadem o f ap proval, put a song in thy lips, give thee beauty for ashes, turn thy mourning into dancing, and thy desert place into a garden o f Eden. “ Consider the lilies” 1 —J. O swald D ykes . SEPTEMBER 27 L essons from the L ilies "Consider the lilies” (Matt. 6:28). “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works” (Eph. 2: 10 ). Faith can be worth nothing unless it has, deeply imbedded within it, a trembling dis trust o f one’s own power. This is the pre requisite and companion of all thankful and faithful reception o f God’s infinite mercy. Your horizon ought to be full of fear, if gaze is limited to yourself. But above our earthly horizon with its fogs, God’s infinite blue stretches untroubled by the mists and clouds which are earth-born. I, as work ing, have need to tremble and to fear. But I, as wrought upon, have a right to confi dence and hope, and hope that is full o f SEPTEMBER 28 I n F ear , Y et S ecure
