FATHERHOOD, FAMILY, AND FUN

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE’S GREATEST ADVENTURE

Fathers play an essential role in their children’s development. In many families, the mom plays the part of the nurturer, while the dad sets the ground rules and is the face of security for their children. Children often look up to their fathers and can recognize the sacrifices that their fathers make to ensure they have a happy and fulfilling childhood. I love being a father to my children and treasure every moment I spend with them. In June, we celebrate Father’s Day, which gives us a chance to appreciate the men who raised us and allows those of us who have had the privilege of becoming fathers to reflect on our prior experiences. It’s crazy to think about how much your life changes after having a child. Figuring out how much my first baby needed me was life- changing to say the least. I didn’t really know what to expect at the time, but I knew that success was my only option. In past newsletters, I’ve talked about my thought process and how I refuse to fail at anything. The birth of my eldest daughter was one of those moments when I had to buckle down and learn. I had to figure out how to be a dad and determine what I wanted to pass on to my kids. It was a new level of responsibility. For the past 19 years, I have put my kids first and tried to provide them with every opportunity needed to succeed in life.

There have been many lessons that I’ve tried to instill in my kids through my parenting efforts. I want to be a role model for them so they know and understand the importance of hard work, good character, strong confidence, and the idea that you stand by what you say. Nothing in life comes easy, so you have to work diligently for the good stuff, and good things typically happen through hard work. I am incredibly proud of my kids and the young adults they have grown into. There were times when I had to be tough on them or set expectations they needed to reach, but it helped them develop into who they are today and set them on a path toward success. Nothing brings you more pride than watching your kids grow into responsible and respectful people. It always warms my heart when other parents give me positive feedback about my children. I’ve always felt like my role in the family is the tough rule-setter who primarily operates behind the scenes, but over the years, I’ve worked on being more vocal so my kids know just how appreciated and loved they are. It’s not natural for me to gush over them after they’ve done something good and tell them how proud of them I am. I’ve had to learn to tell them I love them every day because it’s not necessarily something I grew up with in my childhood. Now, I go out of my way to tell my kids that I support,

love, and care for them. I won’t always make things easy on them because they need to learn to be self-sufficient, but I will always be there to help them on their journeys. “FOR THE PAST 19 YEARS, I HAVE PUT MY KIDS FIRST AND TRIED TO PROVIDE THEM WITH EVERY OPPORTUNITY NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN LIFE.” Fathers can be exemplary role models for young boys and girls. It takes incredible effort to be a father. Nothing is more rewarding than being present for your children, watching them grow, and realizing that you’ve helped them develop into the best versions of themselves.

Happy Father’s Day!

WHAT’S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT?

Benefits and Risks of ‘Bee Sting’ Therapy

Most people will freeze in place or slowly back away when they hear the distinctive buzzing of a bee nearby — nobody wants to get stung! However, Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities have embraced apitherapy, a type of therapy that uses bee stings to treat scarring, inflammation, and many dental and health conditions. Here’s the thing, though: Apitherapy has been shown to carry many risks along with the benefits; thus, it’s vital to discuss this treatment with your doctor before giving it a go! WHAT DOES APITHERAPY ENTAIL? The use of honeybee venom, pollen, honey, or beeswax to treat joint pain for arthritis and other medicinal purposes can be traced back to ancient Egypt, China, and Greece. Honeybee products can be used topically as an ointment or cream, orally or via injection (sometimes by a medically administered bee sting). WHAT ARE THE RISKS? First and most obvious, if an individual is allergic to honey or bee products, the allergic reaction can be dangerous. However, other risks with apitherapy include muscular weakness, headaches, jaundice, body pains, uterine contractions, or a cough. Everyone

responds differently to natural therapy and some apitherapy practices, but using honey to soothe a sore throat can carry fewer risks than others.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Apitherapy has been proven effective in treating scars and wounds, reducing plaque and gingivitis, and regulating thyroid function. Even neurological and immune diseases such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and

Alzheimer’s can respond positively to apitherapy. It can also ease the symptoms

of allergies, shingles, and gout and can help reduce nerve pain.

If this natural therapy sounds appealing, discuss the idea with your doctor before trying it. If they give you the all-clear, the next step is to locate a trusted apitherapy provider!

Don’t Take a Break From Your Fitness HOW TO SNEAK IN EXERCISE WHILE TRAVELING at your different hotel or Airbnb options. Those who run every morning or evening will want to stay somewhere that can accommodate their needs, either with nearby running trails/paths or a treadmill within the property’s gym. If you want to work out using free weights or machines, you’ll want to stay somewhere with a gym on site. Most hotels have a small gym reserved for patrons but double-check their website and with the hotel’s front desk team to ensure they have what you need. You can also bring your own workout equipment if there isn’t another option available. Resistance bands and jump ropes are easy to travel with and will provide you with a reasonable workout. SCHEDULE TIME FOR YOUR WORKOUT. If you don’t set time aside for your workout, you likely won’t do it. The best way to ensure you have time for a daily workout is to plan an itinerary for your entire trip. It might sound tedious, but it will help ensure everything runs smoothly, regardless of whether it’s related to your exercise or not. Once you know your plans for each day, you can find time in your schedule to exercise without sacrificing any valuable family time.

Summer has finally arrived, and many of us plan to take a family vacation or two while the kids are off from school. Are you worried about how that vacation will interfere with your exercise routine? People tend to overeat while on vacation, and unless they’re going to an amusement park or spending a week in the great outdoors, there will likely be little movement involved. This can be disastrous for your health and wellness, but it’s not worth canceling your trip over. Thankfully, there are ways to still get in your exercise or daily movement while traveling.

Here are two things you can do to ensure you get regular exercise while on vacation this summer.

PICK THE RIGHT HOTEL. Where you stay each night will play a significant role in your fitness routine. Think about how you usually exercise, and determine if that will be feasible

What do you do once you notice that a headache is rapidly approaching? For many, this is a time to turn to painkillers and rest. Sometimes this method works; other times, it doesn’t do enough, and the pain persists. It really depends on the type of headache. You might get relief if you’re experiencing a tension headache, but painkillers usually aren’t enough if you’re one of the 12% of American adults who regularly suffer from migraines. Migraines are incredibly debilitating and can knock you out of commission for hours if not days. This has left many Americans wondering how they can find relief. Thankfully, some gentle stretches can help reduce the pain of migraines. Stretching helps relax the body and mind, so the next time you experience a migraine, give one of the following stretches a try. MIGRAINE BE GONE!

CHILD’S POSE If you’ve ever participated in yoga, you’re probably already quite familiar with the child’s pose. For those unfamiliar, start by kneeling on the floor and spreading your knees wide apart. Make sure your toes are touching, and your butt is resting on your heels. Lengthen your spine and place your hands on your thighs. Lower your torso between your thighs with your hands reaching forward. Rest your hands on the floor and relax your muscles. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat as needed. DOWNWARD-FACING DOG This stretch helps circulate blood to your head, which can ease migraine pain. Fasting Is the Most Lasting Diet Fad

F

a s t i

S E

There always seems to be a new dieting fad every couple of months, but one that has stayed around longer than expected is intermittent fasting. Many of us couldn’t imagine fasting

Regardless of which type of intermittent fasting you attempt, you’ll likely notice many benefits within the first few months. Studies

have shown that it can improve your cholesterol levels and help you maintain proper blood sugar levels. Many studies have shown that those who practice intermittent fasting have no problem shedding

for days on end, but intermittent fasting provides the benefits of fasting without asking us to wait days between meals. Intermittent fasting is a term used to describe eating patterns with differing amounts of fasting. There are three main types. The first and most common type is time-restricted eating, and it’s one of the easiest intermittent fasting diets to stick to daily. Time-restricted fasting has users decide on an eating window lasting between four and 12 hours. If it isn’t during your eating window, you’re actively fasting. The next is the 5:2 diet, which calls for two full days of fasting each week, with a regular eating schedule for the other five days. Finally, there’s alternate-day fasting, in which users alternate between fasting one day and eating normally the next.

weight and also keeping it off. Many users report losing 3%–7% of their body weight within eight weeks of fasting. Studies even found intermittent fasting can lower the risk of breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and other serious conditions.

Does this all sound too good to be true? That’s because it likely is. The Journal of the American Medical Association looked at 108 studies conducted on the alleged health benefits of intermittent fasting and found that only six were supported by solid evidence. That doesn’t mean the health benefits don’t exist; we just need more research before saying intermittent fasting is as beneficial for our health as its users claim it to be.
