Unit Projects: Humorous Fiction

At this point, children have listened to all five of the read-aloud books and read humorous fiction books in their Book Club Library. Together, have them name the characters they liked reading about. Then recall with children some of the funny incidents in the books they read. Create a Comic Strip Materials paper, pencils, ruler, crayons or markers Directions • Demonstrate how to draw a classic comic strip frame. • Use the ruler to draw two or more boxes. • Pick two characters from the books from the unit—for example, Bird and Squirrel from Bird & Squirrel On the Run! • Think of a new funny situation the characters might find themselves in. • Draw the characters for the first box. • Think of what the characters might say, and write what they say in speech balloons above their heads. Next • Give out materials to children. • Have children work on their own or with partners. • As children work, give help as needed. Share the Completed Projects • After children complete their comic strips, invite them to share their comic strips with the group. • Invite children to tell why they chose the characters they did.
