The 44 Sounds in the English Language

This chart shows the 44 sounds (phonemes) in the English language. The sounds are made by the 26 letters of the alphabet. Some sounds are made by combining the letters. There are consonant sounds and vowel sounds. This chart shows an example of each sound as it is used in a familiar word.
