Creation Day 3: God creates the Earth using His Special Mayim
The average density of rocks that make up the continental crust (on the left) is about 2.83 g/cm. Continental rocks are composed mainly of lighter elements such as silica and oxygen. The average density of rocks that make up the oceanic crust (on the right) is 3.3 g/cm. Oceanic rocks (mainly basalt) are composed mainly of heavier elements such as iron and magnesium.
Hidden beneath Earth’s oceans, 42,000 miles of underwater volcanoes spew out lav a at mid-oceanic ridges ( mid-ocean ridges line the centers of every ocean ).
Because divergent plates move apart from each other at mid-oceanic ridges, magma flows upwards from the mantle beneath and makes new ocean crust (basalt) at a rate of 2 - 4 centimeters (1 inch) per year.
