T he picture above shows how Earth's magnetosphere acts as a n invisible shield c arving out a safe ty zone around our planet free from most of the dangerous particles the sun emits out into space. Without our protective magnetosphere, the solar winds would damage Earth's atmosphere and strip away our ozone layer that protects all living organisms from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Periodically (in 11-year cycles) , the s un releases enormous amounts of dangerous high energy plasma ( hydrogen atoms without electrons ) from its surface out into space in the form of a coronal mass ejection ( CME ) . When the particles of a CME reaches the Earth's magnetosphere, they stretch and distort it much like a tree in a strong wind. One of the effects when a CME

They can also disrupt telecommunications and navigation systems. They have the potential to affect power grids, and have been known to black out entire cities, even entire regions.
