The Science of Water (Mayim) Ask any one who has taken high school chemistry if they can recall the chemical formula for water and most people will respond: "That's simple! The chemical formula for water is H2O." They may even re member from their chemistry class that a water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen molecule. Chances are , if you ask them if they can recall any other chemical formula, they will probably pause for a moment before say ing "no". The question is now, with all the numerous chemical formulas we were taught, why d oes only one chemical formula stand out in our memories? The ir answer is simple. Next to oxygen - O2 - (20.9 % of the air you breathe) , H2O or HOH (70% of your body mass) is the most important ingredient for life.
Here are some more amazing facts about the chemistry of water. • A water molecule is composed of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen ; the first and third most abundant elements in the universe, respectively. • Water is unique on earth as it exist naturally in all three states of matter : as a solid, liquid and as a gaseous vapor . • The water molecule ( pictured above ) owes these unique properties to the polarity of its molecules. Thanks to its opposite polar charges ( + hydrogen/ - oxygen ) and its bent shape ( 104 degrees ) , water molecules happily attract each other in what is known in chemistry as a covalent bond ( sharing electrons ). • Water molecules are also attracted to other polar molecules making it the "universal solvent" because it dissolves more substances than any other known liquid. Because of water's unique ability as "universal solvent", God created water ( mayim ) to be the most important solvent in the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory and transpiration processes of all living things, including man.
