Creation Day 3: God creates the "chemical" breath of life
How P lants are Classified Always remember this very important fact: Our God is a God of order . Genesis 1 and science both agree that plants were the first living things to successful ly arrive and thrive on Earth for one purpose only: to provide the right amount of oxygen in the atmosphere for future animals to breathe. The word ‘plant’ encompasses nearly 300,000 species of living organisms, all of which: • are multicellular - they are made up of more than one cell; • make their own food by photosynthesis; • are made of cells with chloroplasts containi ng the green pigment chlorophyll which absorbs all colors of sunlight, but reflects green .
Mosses & liverworts are considered the simplest of all plant species . Despite lacking some essential plant organs (true leaves, stems, and roots), God created them to play an important role in minimizing soil erosion along bodies of water and regulating temperatures in the permafrost regions of the Earth. Ferns are seedless plants that produce spores located on the underside of their leaves. Leaves of ferns are called fronds, which typically are coiled until they unroll at maturity. There are 12,000 species of ferns ( most are tropical). Gymnosperms are characterized by having cone-bearing seeds and evergreen needle-like leaves. They include pines, hemlocks, firs, and spruces, which are the tallest, the thickest, and the oldest living plants. Angiosperms, also referred to as the flowering plants , are the most diverse plant phylum with at least 260,000 living plant species found on every continent.
