Creation Day 3: God creates the "chemical" breath of life
God's step-by-step 'timed process' in creating plants on Earth Scientists can tell the age of different rock layers because they know that each layer of rock is deposited on top of other layers. This is called the law of superposition . The law of superposition states that each rock layer is older than the one above it. The oldest rocks are found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the youngest rocks are on the top.
Th is next set of pictures will help us understand how scientists use absolute dating , the second method in determining the exact timing of God's step-by-step process in creating plants on Earth.
The rock in picture A is a special kind of sedimentary rock called a stromatolite . Stromatolites form over time by the slow growth of layer upon layer of cyanobacteria ( a type of bacteria that obtains its energy through photosynthesis ) in shallow lakes and seas. Picture B is simply an old man ( you guess his age ). The rock in picture C is hot basalt cooling on the Earth's surface near a Hawaiian volcano. Now, going only be the information given, answer just one question: • Arrange these three pictures in order from the youngest (in age) to the oldest (in age). The answer s will be revealed on the following page.
