Creation Day 4 God reveals His "heavenly clocks" in the night and day sky
According to Genesis 1:16 -19, the moon and sun are the real "stars" of Creation Day 4. Let's read these verses one more time to get at better understanding of the important role God assigned to each of them. 16. God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night. 17. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18. and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. ~ Genesis 1:14-19 ESV T he Hebrew word for made - recorded in Genesis 1:16 - is"asah " ﬠָשָ ׂה , which means "to do" or "to appoint." The sun and moon were not "created" (bara בָ ָּ֣רא ) on Creation Day 4. God appointed the sun and moon with the specific tasks of governing the day and night sky by separating the light from the darkness. The movements of the moon and sun in the earth's sky establishes the daily routine of day and night.
God also appointed the sun and moon as signs in the heavens to designate appointed seasons, days, and years. The Hebrew word "signs" in Genesis 1:14 is "owth" אוֹת which means "pledge" or "assurance." As inhabitants of Earth, we witness the daily and seasonal effects of the sun and moon with the confident
assurance that "For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest." ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 NLT
