DNA Fact Sheet

In 1953, University of Chicago researchers Stanley L. Miller and Harold C. Urey set up an experiment to determine the chemical origins of life. In their experiment they introduced gases though t to exist in the early Earth's primitive atmosphere into a closed chamber. Methane (CH 4 ), hydrogen (H 2 ), and ammonia (NH 3 ) gases were introduced into a moist environment above a water-containing flask. To simulate primitive lightning discharges, Miller supplied the system with electrical current.

The Urey Miller e xperiment’s results 1. The Urey Miller experiment did produce five amino acids: glycine, α-alanine and β-alanine, aspartic acid and α-aminobutyric acid - none of which are the required amino acids to produce DNA's proteins: A denine, T hymine, C ytosine and G uanine. 2. Models of early Earth conditions, which were not included in the Urey Miller experiment, show the presence of carbon dioxide and nitrogen (N 2 ) create nitrites, which destroy amino acids as fast as they form. 3. Experimental conclusions – 65 years have passed since the Urey Miller experiment. All successive attempts to get amino acids to combine under strict laboratory conditions into something like a protein have proven to be scientifically impossible. Only life can produce life.
